POW Experience Overrated

60s feminist icon says. NY Observer

“Suppose John McCain had been Joan McCain and Joan McCain had got captured, shot down and been a POW for eight years. [The media would ask], ‘What did you do wrong to get captured? What terrible things did you do while you were there as a captive for eight years?’” Steinem said, to laughter from the audience.

McCain was, in fact, a prisoner of war for around five-and-a-half years, during which time he was tortured repeatedly. Referring to his time in captivity, Steinem said with bewilderment, “I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”

Steinem’s broader argument was that the media and the political world are too admiring of militarism in all its guises.

“I am so grateful that she [Clinton] hasn’t been trained to kill anybody. And she probably didn’t even play war games as a kid. It’s a great relief from Bush in his jump suit and from Kerry saluting.”

I dunno, I thought Kerry peering out from under that salute to see if it going to fly was one of the high points of the Dems’ 2004 campaign.  It was definitely all downhill after that.

It has to be galling for Steinem after all these years that the world, in the most fundamental ways, hasn’t changed.  Women have achieved something close to equality. Not perfect.  Quite a bit of progress in places where she had nothing to do with it. They’ve led nations from Britain to Israel to Pakistan and India. There are even women trained to kill, wearing jump suits and saluting. Because the world still respects military experience, and women are seeking it.

Anyway, great work for the campaign, Gloria.  I wonder if Clinton is going to have to disavow that ahead of her big Ohio, Texas primaries. It would be cruelly ironic if the iconic feminist put the last nail in the coffin of the first viable woman’s candidacy.

Surber’s PO’d by the POW remark.

Welc ome Punditeers, Surberistas, etal. All your icon-bashing needs here.

Decrepit Feminist Hag: McCain’s P.O.W. Cred Is Overrated

Typical bilge one should expect from this relic, so I’m not really surprised she’d have the temerity to say such things.

Just keep it up, folks. But don’t whine and moan when John McCain is being sworn in next January.

Gloria’s upset because bra burning is so 1965.

Those who live by the 60’s memorabilia (in the primary), die by the 60’s memorabilia (in the general election).
    It’s been that way since….say, 1968.

Her comments are disgusting. But what’s new?

‘But she also opined that “a majority of Americans want redemption for racism, for our terrible destructive racist past and so see a vote for Obama as redemptive.” Then, using a term for the mass killing of women, she added, “I don’t think as many want redemption for the gynocide.”’

Typical leftist claptrap. In truth, in the United States, males are FOUR TIMES more likely to be murdered than females (so if we’re going to worry about mass murder by sex, it’s HIMicide we need to worry about, not “gyoncide”).

    Feminism is hogwash.

Steinhem is now, and always has been, an utter ass.

I haven’t listened to anything Gloria Steinem’s had to say since the 60s. I didn’t like her even then. She’s a bitter old man-hater.

Jules, two of your links “trained to kill” and “jump suits” lead to a Samizdata post about Prince Harry.

I’m no John McCain fan, but the remarks, not only by Missy Gloria, but also by Gen. Clark, are just beyond the pale. G.S. has values nothing and so, respects nothing. She’s a stone bitch.

By-the-bye, she’s not so upset about the bra thing, only that, because of her insistence on bra-burning, her breasts now reach her knees. (My sincere apologies for the mental visual.)

Maybe not, but it’s a lot more impressive on McCain’s resume then what Obama was doing in his younger years, which was smoking dope and snorting coke.

Of course, as Allahpundit pointed out, this is a complete reversal for Clark, since Clark endorsed John Effing Kerry back in 2004 exclusively on his so-called military
experience. Coming from Clark, either endorsement is ludicrous, given that he nearly caused World War III while commanding NATO forces in the former Yugoslavia.

salty, I’ll be Gloria wears bras now…..and hates them! BUAWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
