Danny Boy
Let’s hear it for the Irish pub owner who’s had it with the depressing dirge and is banning it in his mid-town NYC bucket of suds. A Detroit hoistel is planning a 50-hour “Danny Boy” marathon. Sounds like Irish hell. Except the lyrics were written by a Pommie bastid who never set foot on Erin’s emerald shore. 1915 debut by opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink sounds a little like Al O’Jolson in greenface.
AndStep in comments invites a Danny Boy marathon. Your Danny Boy yarns welcomed.

There’s an episode of the cartoon series “Futurama” in which a phony funeral is given for one of the characters (Bender the robot) to show that he’s appreciated, and while singing ‘Danny Boy’ Dr Zoidberg (from the sort-of human-like lobster planet) is hit in the head with a beer bottle. An excellent response to a song that too many elementary school bands (including mine) have been forced to play, sometimes under the title “Londonderry Air”. (Would have been even funnier if it had been a caricature of Streisand singing.)

I got nuthin’. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the song. And now I have reason not to.
But I guess I finally get that obscure reference in “Where Eagles Dare”, when Richard Burton is calling HQ on the wireless: “Broadsword calling Danny Boy! Broadsword calling Danny Boy!”
