Trainwreck

  Pre-scandal: N.Y. Gov. Eliot Spitzer...

Mr. and Mrs. Spitzer in happier times, last year, as Harvard alumni maggie 02138’s Power Couple poster kids.

Everybody knows the rest of the story, how the mighty are fallen, or are trying to keep from falling. It’s all pretty sordid. This ABC report has interesting details on how they caught him. But all I really want to know is what we probably don’t get to find out, and that’s how he got the wife to stand next to him in front the cameras for the big apology.  I’m guessing it went something like this:

“This is what we have to do to keep the career. Bill was getting hummers from an intern in the Oval Office. All I did was … well, let’s just say we’ll be fine, honey.”

“Don’t call me honey.”

Something like that. Meanwhile, the Clinton woman is trying to steer clear of this mess. Could bring up bad memories. For the voters.

I’d really rather steer clear of this particular trainwreck myself, except the thing about trainwrecks, it’s hard not to look. OK, here’s your sordid details: At least someone in Room 871 knew what her purpose was.

CBS: How can we stop despising you if you won’t go away? Impeachment.

Here’s the Boston Herald’s Margery Eagan, if you haven’t had enough yet.

And here’s a guy who wonders what the big deal is. I guess that’s for Spitzer and the state of New York and the U.S. attorney’s office to sort out. Spitzer will be glad there’s at least one part-time New Yorker/sockpuppet in his corner. But is that Riehlly how he feels? Hard to tell with a sockpuppet.

NYT ed board with another perspective on what the big deal is.

Malkin, on how Spitzer had been planning to spend his day before the regret set in.

OK, move long, nothing to see here. Welcome Malkinistas, etal. Need some non-sordid Dem news? Meanwhile, for something a little more uplifting, here’s the story of love so big, it needed a forklift.

This is as much about organized crime as anything salacious. If he was in bed with organized prostitution, he was in bed with organized crime.

  4. Dave Surls Says:

‘Prosecutors reportedly have a series of e-mails and wiretapped phone conversations of Spitzer.’

‘In a interview two years ago, Spitzer, then-attorney general, told ABC News he had some advice for people who break the law. “Never talk when you can nod, and never nod when you can wink, and never write an e-mail because it’s death. You’re giving prosecutors all the evidence we need,” he said.’

    LOL.

  5. RebeccaH Says:

In the video, Spitzer seems to have that Clintonian attitude of, “Okay, so I got caught, let’s move on.” His poor wife, on the other hand, looks the way you’d expect a woman who’s been publicly humiliated by the antics of her knotheaded husband to look.

The guy is a liar and a cheat, never mind the hypocrisy. New York needs to get rid of him.

  6. tanstaafl Says:

Spitzer’s wife is a lawyer and they have 3 beautiful daughters.

It’s the saddest thing here. For them, not him.

As somewhere noted, in the atmosphere of even just 20 years ago, Spitzer would already have resigned. But in today’s times, he is undoubtedly negotiating furiously with his high powered Manhattan lawyers to salvage something or to at least tying resigning from the governership with no jail time.

I have many examples of tanstaafl’s law, and E. Spitzer is one more example.

To the extent that any single individual harps about “morality” and cleaning up the mess, such as Wall Street (formerly) or the Albany legislature (currently), that individual’s own personal integrity and credentials become open to question.

No, RebeccaH, he should stay. He will make a great pinata.

  8. Texas Turkey Says:

I think the highlight of yesterday evening were the ex-Clintonista apologists out en force on CNN, beginning with Carville.

Carville: “Eh, whats the big deal, its not like he stole something…” (paraphrased)

  9. tanstaafl Says:

I don’t understand how Mary Matalin stays married to James Carville.

  10. Vanguard of the Commentariat Says:

Its just his personal life, not any of the little people’s concern.

He’s a Democrat, he means well.

Just taking care of some poor women who couldn’t break through the glass ceiling and were forced onto prostitution by the Bush tax cuts.

At least he didn’t lie about weapons of mass destruction!

C’mon folks, try to get in touch with your inner New York Times.

“I don’t understand how Mary Matalin stays married to James Carville.” tanstaafl.

She probably gives him some of his best lines.
