Closed Session

Only the 5th in the House since 1825, called by the GOP to allow a frank and open discussion of the FISA bill. The Hill

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) has agreed to a GOP request for a secret House session Thursday to discuss the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act (FISA).

House Republicans had been seeking the closed session to delay a vote on a new Democratic FISA overhaul, unveiled Tuesday, and discuss its national security implications.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to hear what kind of nonsense comes out of this session. Because there will be nonsense, and we will get to hear about it.

“The reason for calling a closed session is so that all members of the House can be present to discuss and have a candid debate on the importance of passing a long-term modernization of our nation’s foreign surveillance,” the GOP memo states.

Yeah, that’s great, GOP, but the party of the mandate is not interested in a long-term modernization of our nation’s foreign surveillance. The majority in Congress is interested in short-term political gain, and has no interest in the best interest of our nation whatsoever. At least, that’s what I’m taking from the past year and 2 1/2 months.

Hmmm. The GOP leadership has shown that it still knows how to use these procedural shenanigans to full effect. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they probably know what they’re doing here, though what that is, I have no idea.
