The man was a visionary thinker and inspired much of the future he envisioned. There's a reason why the era of Clarke, Heinlein, and Asimov was called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Science fiction writers seem to be working their way out of the sorry state science fiction has fallen to in the last few decades, and will once again point the way, and I'm positive the influence of Arthur C. Clarke will be one reason.

Well, that's depressing. He really was a visionary, and one of the great sci-fi writers back when sci-fi was still in its heyday.

His strength was in creating imaginative scenarios, then plugging in ordinary people to live them out. It gave his novels a matter-of-factness feel, even when they were about subjects that seemed far fetched even for science fiction. I think it made it easier for readers to see something they would normally consider impossible, and think, "you know, we really could do that some day."
