Grim Milestone
Grim milestone headline, grim milestone lede, grim milestone 2nd graph in this AP article at MSNBC. It can’t get much grimmer. AP posits hopefully:
BAGHDAD - The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq rose to 4,000 after four soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, a grim milestone that is likely to fuel calls for the withdrawal of American forces as the war enters its sixth year.
Not clear what AP is basing its expectations on. I’d suggest the 4,000 number is more likely to fuel the rhetoric than the calls themselves, which are all tanked up already. Compliments of the AP, whose war coverage has been predominantly a grim numbers game. Marked in the past several weeks by breathless anticipation of sufficient death to inaugurate the next grim milestone.
Here’s a grim milestone on a road the AP has declined to travel. Here’s North Shore Journal’s graphic update, with comparison to enemy kill tally, with notation that unlike AP, he does not include non-combat deaths.
And here, if what you want to do is honor the dead, is a place where you can find out who they are and what they did.
This site will help you support those who have been wounded.
Here and here, you can keep up on what the ones still in the fight are doing.
Here’s a place that can be helpful to understanding what they are doing.
Here’s my own take on where we’ve come from, where we are, where we need to go.
And here, finally, is a place you can go to see where you’ll end up if all you do is follow the grim milestones. Down a pit. Advice to Hiaasen: poke your head up, look around, get a map.

What the anti-war far left was up to this past weekend
Disrupting Easter mass by shouting and throwing fake blood on themselves and parishioners, and slapping a conservative female blogger twice - all in a weekend’s work for hardcore anti-Iraq war protestors left aka “peace activists.” M…

Hiaasen has a nack for writing quirky novels, but he’s become entirely dishonest as an editorialist. He’s like Keith Olbermann with a word processor.
