I agree with flaming lefty Matthew Yglesias:
Chris Bowers sketches out a plausible and appealing scenario in which Barack Obama wraps up the nomination on May 6. Among other things that would be good about such a scenario, it’s worth noting that at this point the main obstacle to a satisfactory resolution of the Florida/Michigan situation is that Clinton continues to be in the race. If she drops out and endorses Obama on May 7 or shortly thereafter, it’ll be easy for Michigan and Florida to be “forgiven” in late May and allowed to fully participate in a rubber stamp convention in exchange for promising to never do it again.
OK, I don’t exactly agree with any of it. The idea that anything has been accomplished in the early state competition by Clinton dropping out is absurd, but the cynical desire for a simple “rubber stamp” convention is charming.
And the prospect of the Democratic race continuing until May 7 is very appealing. At the current rate of at least one debilitating shocker a week, at six weeks, that’s three more debilitating shockers per candidate, with all the accompanying scandalized reaction, media harrassment, etc. Of course, I’d like see it continue through August, with a big superdelegate fight after months of negotiations, manuevering, admonishments, posturing, heartfelt pleas, rending of garments, gnashing of teeth, plucking of eyes, gnawing of tongues for pain, etc. Anything is possible, though as much confidence as I have in the Dems to screw it up, I doubt even they possess sufficient singlemindedness of incompetence, focused moronitude or dough-brained determination to go the distance. I wait to be proven wrong.

A consensus seems to be forming that Hillary Clinton has only a very slim chance to win the nomination. Recent articles in The New York Times and The Politico are examples of this. Further, the consensus is not only that Clinton has a very small chance, but that what chance she does have requires creating a civil war in the Democratic Party by using superdelegates to overturn the popular vote, deny the nomination to the candidate with the most grassroots support in the history of the party, and cancel out the first African-American nominee, even though African-Americans are the most loyal Democratic voting group of all. In other words, Clinton’s only longshot hope is to win the nomination while creating an intra-Democratic civil war that could drive a wedge down the coalition for years.
While I agree with this perspective, I also think it would be bad for Clinton to drop out when she holds an average lead of 16% in the upcoming, major primary of Pennsylvania. Momentum in the general election is often determined by momentum in the primary campaign, and as such it is essential that Obama is not seen as “backing in” to the nomination.
OK, bleed on, to boost Obama. OK. These are the people who think they know how to get America out of Iraq, which I’m sure will be fine, if they ever figure a way out of this destructive race.

Yeah, I hope it lasts to the end. The only way to get the MSM to report on a Democratic candidate is to have them up against another Democrat. Once that’s over, it will be back to hiding anything they find out about the Dem nominee.

The Democratic Party as it stands today desperately needs to be rent asunder and rebuilt. If they don’t do it, a third party is almost inevitable, because the Republicans aren’t doing such a hot job either. At least they aren’t America-hating buttwipes, but we wouldn’t benefit from having them hold all the power.
