Dead to Rights

Lowlife burglar tried to mingle with the clientele, looked too lively. Wire with a Herald assist

MADRID, Spain - The grungy clothes and the breathing were a dead giveaway.

A burglar who broke into a funeral home tried to fool the cops by playing dead. But he stood out like a sore thumb among those who will feel no more pain in this world.

Police and the Crespo Funeral Home’s owners say they have no idea what the 23-year-old Spanish man was trying to steal in the March 17 break-in.

Neighbors living nearby alerted police when they heard the front door of the business being forced open in the middle of the night - a time when the funeral home is usually silent as the grave.

Cops arrived with the owner, and found the suspect lying on a table in a glassed-in chamber used for viewings of the dearly departed during wakes, a local police official said.

“The custom here is for dead people to be dressed in suits, in nice clothes that look presentable. This guy was in everyday clothes that were wrinkled and dirty,” the police official said. “He was trying to fake being dead, but he was breathing.” The suspect’s name was not released. While he has not yet felt the chill of the cold, cold ground, cops said he is familiar with the clink of cell doors, having done time in the past for robbery.
