Race Over

OK, not exactly, but Hillary and Obama have stopped running against each other for the moment.

NYT re Hill:

Perhaps in this case she seems chipper because her message about disenfranchisement has taken hold. Who knows where it will lead, but at the same time, Mrs. Clinton has ceased dropping negative bombs on Mr. Obama. She and her aides have directed their fire instead at President Bush and Senator John McCain, the presumed Republican nominee. On Tuesday, they began a television commercial in Pennsylvania suggesting Mr. McCain is not equipped to handle the nation’s economic problems. In a conference call with reporters, her aides did their best to avoid mention of Mr. Obama.

AP re Obama:

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Democrat Barack Obama has started talking about the elephant in the room – Republican rival John McCain – all but ignoring the rival Democrat who stands between him and the nomination.

… Yesterday and in other recent appearances, Obama has sought to frame the race as a general election matchup between him and McCain.

Don’t worry, it’s not out of any concern for their party. They just figured out the relentless negatives and the damaged Dem stories were starting to put people off.

I expect this will last about as long as your typical middle eastern truce.

I think the damage is already done. And if they both go totally negative on McCain, and McCain manages to stay mostly positive, they’ll only compound it.
