Stupid Criminal Olympics
Serious contender emerges in Athens, rockets straight to the top of the list:
Athens-Clarke County police have arrested an Athens man who allegedly robbed a West Broad Street convenience store Wednesday after filling out a job application.
Despite his apparent interest in new employment opportunities, police suspect the man already has made a career out of armed robbery. They are holding him as a suspect in multiple armed robberies around town.
Police found Demetrius Robinson, 28, about 2 a.m. Saturday at a friend’s apartment in The Park at West Broad apartment complex, about a block from the Golden Pantry store Robinson allegedly robbed, according to a police report.
Robinson filled out the job application to pass time until he and the clerk were alone in the store, according to police. After the last customer left, about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, he went behind the counter, pressed a steak knife into the clerk’s side and made off with the contents of her register, police said.
Robinson left his real name on the application along with his uncle’s phone number, police said. However, the address he left on the application turned out to be bogus, said Detective Jeff Clark.
“It’s kind of strange, but, yes, that’s what he did,” Clark said.
Clark said he had been looking for Robinson for a while in connection with other armed robberies. He had Robinson’s name from the job application, but hadn’t known what he looked like or where to find him.
You know, I could have sworn I had a “stupid criminals” category. Well, I do now.
