McCain refuses to rule out preemptive war. Reuters

McCain, who has wrapped up his party’s nomination to run for the White House in the November election, has maintained support for Iraq war and has said frequently that he would rather lose an election than a war.

When asked at a town hall meeting about the Bush policy on preemption, McCain said: “I don’t think you can make a blanket statement about preemptive war because obviously it depends on the threat that the United States of America faces.”

Sounds about right.  Especially seeing as we’re in a war that, like the Cold War, could go on for decades. Maybe even 100 years. Look forward to that statement morph into “McCain plans another preemptive war.”

I don’t know about you, but I sure hope the Pentagon has some prempt plans drawn up, because I suspect we’ll need them. The threats, you know.

After the Sept. 11 attacks Bush approved a new national security strategy in 2002 that allowed the United States to strike first against U.S. enemies believed to be about to use weapons of mass destruction against America.

The doctrine triggered a wide debate and criticism from the administration’s critics at the time.

In an October 2002 speech, Bush made the case for invading Iraq, saying: “Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof — the smoking gun — that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.”

McCain said the U.S. president should consult more closely with members of Congress so that the branches of government could act together if a threat were imminent.

“In normal times as you see a looming threat … I think you need to consult more closely and more carefully not with every member of Congress but certainly the leaders of Congress.”

That’s interesting. I’m pretty sure George Bush consulted with every single member of Congress in 2002. All but a handful said, “Let’s do it.”  A lot of them changed their minds later, though.

Here’s one who hung in there for a while but changed her mind when she figured out that’s what she need to do if she wanted to be president. The Hero of Tuzla wants you to know only she can be trusted to end the war. That’s because McCain wants it to go on for 100 years, and Obama’s advisors say he doesn’t have a plan.

Now Johnny, I’m sure the jihadists are more scared of you than you are of them. As long as we leave them undisturbed in their natural habitat and don’t make any preemptive moves we’ll be perfectly sa… OH MY GOD, THEY’RE SAWING OFF MY HEAD WITH A RUSTY KNIFE!!!!

This only seems like common sense to me. But I forget: it’s not PC for America to defend itself.

All I can say is that if I were a potential ally, I wouldn’t trust the U.S. as far as the next election.

The Democrats should have been so discredited by their performance over the past 6 years that they’d have to change the name of the party to get reelected. They voted to authorize this war and then turned and did everything they could to turn it into a failure.
But the press keeps them alive by ignoring success. It’s like the 70s all over again.
