Alienation
Bigotry-plagued Dems, feeling singled out and desperately looking for some bigoted company on the other side of the aisle, figure they’ve found it in a McCain speech. Maguire at JustOneMinute does the honors, letting them down harshly. The only thing I’d add is, what is “anti-immigrant” thing Obama and everyone else keeps talking about? Immigrants are great. I know lots of them. My parents were immigrants. It’s the massive uncontrolled onslaught of millions of illegal aliens that I have a problem with. That and people who want me to press 1 for English. In fact, I have yet to encounter anyone who’s anti-immigrant in this debate. There are a lot of people who’d rather be anti-anti-immigrant than anti-anti-illegal alien, though.

I agree. Very few people are against immigration in principle. What they have a problem with is uncontrolled borders and a lack of basic cultural assimilation. What is so hypocritical is that the same people who would insist that Americans moving to another country should learn that country’s customs, language, and abide by its laws, feel that people coming here have absolutely no obligation to do the same.
We’ve made it increasingly difficult and expensive to come here legally, while at the same time made it easier and easier for people who are here illegally. That’s backwards! And they wonder why this has become such a big issue?

…they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. (Barry O)
Barry’s use of “anti-immigrant” to the mostly white audience in northern California…is a euphemism for “anti Muslim” or “anti Hispanic”.
As for cultural attitudes, isn’t it the owner of a Philly cheese steak sandwich place that has a sign in the window…”only English spoken here” ?
Something wrong with that ?
To simply acknowledge that most Americans, in Pennsylvania and elsewhere are genuinely “frustrated” because illegal immigration laws aren’t being enforced…would not suit Barack’s holier than thou persona/message.
Nor would it have been savvy of Barack to inform that particular audience that they were typical white people. In flattering them for their enlightened attitudes (cough) you’ll note he didn’t burden them the way he dissed his poor white grandma.

It would be stupid for any American (except perhaps Native Americans) to be anti-immigration, as the country was founded on immigration. But since when do we have to sit still for waves of illegals pouring unchecked across our borders, flouting the very laws and culture that made America a desirable place to come to in the first place?

Might want to ask the native Americans who stuck a spear in Kennewick man.

Yes, that’s an accurate statement of the root of the problem. But you try to change the current immigration laws and you’ll find out that A LOT of people have trouble with immigration in general. People don’t have a problem with immigration in the ABSTRACT otherworldly sense, as if that really mattered. The people always claiming they have no problem with legal immigration always do. It is a basic insecurity, just like the libs always claiming they are patriotic. As if to say “no I don’t have a problem”. In my experience, those claiming all they want is assimilation see no assimilation, hear no assimilation, speak no assimilation. Intermarriage, no that doesn’t count. Changing religions, no that doesn’t count. Assimilation is happening faster than ever before, but the patience of the natives is growing ever shorter, the natives’ historical knowledge (of how immigrants assimilated in the past) is ever less, and Americans don’t seem to even be aware of how long it takes to learn a language anymore since English is the language of the world now, thank God.
No problem with legal immigration? On what planet? Let’s hear three cheers for raising the H1-B to a reasonable level to match the decline in American scientists and engineers. Anyone?

LOL Jules. Yes, there’s growing evidence that the people we call Native Americans were not here first, and that they probably wiped out the first group. (We don’t know that for sure, but given all we know of human history, it sure seems likely.)
