About Those Recruitment Issues

They want a draft? OK, let’s have a draft.  No problem. A couple of things, though. The last thing we want to do is screw with the world’s greatest professional volunteer Army. And there has to be an alternative for principled peaceniks. The Work Corps.  Sounds harsh, I know. The W-word. Just wait till you hear about the Punishment Battalions.* It might sound a little more Stalinist than FDR, but hey, it’s what the lefties want. Let’s engage America’s youth in a great common venture: Crittenden at Pajamas Media

* No, not like those.

Not like real Shtrafbats. Though if this war keeps on, especially if we start capitulating, we might need them before its over.

Certainly not like this or this.  Please, we are civilized people. Though once you start going down the road of compelling any kind of behavior for the greater social good, you never knew where you’ll end up.

    These daffy calls for a draft are just another aspect of the Longing For Vietnam Syndrome (LFVS). The lefties want a draft so they burn draft cards, protest draft boards, and run off to Canada with the police on their tale, all in a bid to get more attention.

    Poor, poor lefties……reality really bites , hmmmmmmm?

    No, no, a thousand times no! Never conscritption - for any purpose. That time has come and, thankfully, gone. The Industrial Age need for lots of bodies wielding shovels or rifles or what has passed. Let it lie with the corvee’ and feudal dues…

    No draft, but it might be a good idea to think of ways to expose more people to military service. Maybe a voluntary program of basic training and a one year commitment with no overseas deployment (until they enlist) as a way to get more young men ready for military service. Not the reserves, which has a long term commitment. Basically just one year of training and then you’re out, with no further obligation unless you choose to stay in, or join up later. It might be too expensive, or it might backfire - but on the other hand, I think a lot of them would end up staying on once their year was up, or go to college instead and join ROTC. (They would also be more likely to enlist after an event like 9/11, and would be much better prepared than a new recruit.)

    A major benefit would be that it would make for an easier sell to parents. Which, I have been told by several recruiters, is the absolute #1 problem they face today.

    I’m sure there are lots of arguments for why this is a stupid idea. My point is that it could be time to try something different, because I don’t see this problem resolving itself. It won’t be long before a majority of young adults will grow up without knowing a single family member who was in the military.

    Did something happen late in the day September the Eleventh?

    Before that time–Vietnam, draft evasion flight to Canada AWOL fragging two or three planes flown into buildings with (apparently) docile prisoners going along for the ride.

    After that time–”Middle East, one plane (maybe two) into the ground with the prisoners unsuccessfully, I am sorry to report fighting for their lives and to thwart the mission of the mad men enlistments up, morale up, respect up, civilian recover up

    I’m not sure I see the picture clearly yet–I’ve only been working on it a few minutes.

    The reason for the draft is that they can’t justify a protest movement with no self-centered students being required to serve in a war zone.

    When the draft is reinstated they feel that their natural base will get fired up, and a repeat of the wave that brought them to power will happen. Without a draft some of their tools will become visible and that would be the worst thing that could happen in their minds.

  6. Bullshark Says:

    No to the draft. How about instead for completing an enlistment w/ honor, no taxes, ever! No federal/state income tax, no federal excise tax, no property tax, no sales tax! None whatsoever!
