Saving the planet hits women, minorities hardest
Hindu newspaper: “Increasing demand for biofuels could be detrimental for women.”
That’s what a study concluded. And as everyone knows, if it is in a study, it must be true.
“Increasing demand for liquid biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, the conversion of agricultural land for their production and increased use of natural resources could be detrimental to women in rural areas, a new United Nations study warns,” The Hindu reported.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization warned that women and small farmers may be left out of the rush to produce biofuels.
“Unless policies are adopted in developing countries to strengthen the participation of small farmers, especially women in biofuel production by increasing their access to land, capital and technology, gender inequalities are likely to become more marked and women’s vulnerability to hunger and poverty further exacerbated,” co-author of the study, Yianna Lambrou, said.
