From the Mouths of Babes
Fifteen-year-old Miley Cyrus is embarrassed that she allowed herself to be photographed semi-nude, in a sultry come-hither pose. No word on whether Billy Ray or Annie Leibowitz are embarrassed about $$$exualizing an underage girl. Vanity Fair says the 15-year-old was all right with it and that’$$$ good enough for them. Sounds like in the end, the 15-year-old might have better instincts than the adults in her life. Look, I like cheesecake as much as the next guy. A great American tradition. Call me old-fashioned, but I draw the line a few years north of the age of consent. You know, before it gets disturbing. Here’s hoping this charming, talented girl, who my kids are big fans of, doesn’t end up going the way of other exploited children.
Malkin with related thoughts, and more re Leibowitz’s body of body work.

The person who deserves to be drawn and quartered here is the father who would not only allow, but encourage, his own daughter to do such a thing. Billy Ray Cyrus has just sealed his reputation forever as white trash. Let’s hope his daughter escapes his influence soon enough.

I don’t know. I looked at the photo in question, and that’s not what I would call a come-hither expression. If anything, the photo emphasizes her childishness. She’s more girl than young woman in that picture, like a girl who put on too much of her Mom’s makeup.
That said, it was probably a bad idea. I mean, what’s the point of it? (From an artistic point of view, not the magazine’s $$$ point of view, which is obvious.)
Also, don’t underestimate the power of post editing. The shot that she and her parents saw on the set probably looked quite different. I doubt her lipstick was overemphasized that way, for instance.

What’s notable to me is that all the PR organizations in the world couldn’t have handled it as well as she did.
