You’re Getting Warmer
It short, what this NZ commentator is saying is:
1. Miniscule, incremental, measurement-defying CO2 savings* are stupid even if you believe we can stop the world from warming up.
2. Scientists have not yet established whether they know what they are talking about, but have established that they want you to think they do.
And maybe most importantly, news to me,
3. Gaia doesn’t know she’s supposed to be warming up and isn’t cooperating.**
Also,
4. What’s the big rush?
* I’d just like to say that I live in Massachusetts, which has roughly twice the population of New Zealand, but all our heavy industry fled decades ago. If they should be able to enjoy the benefits of industrialized society without having any industry, and get off the hook on Canute-like tide-stopping dunnage, then I strongly believe we should also.
** The Daily Telegraph article citation states:
“Global warming will stop until at least 2015 because of natural variations in the climate, scientists have said. Researchers studying long-term changes in sea temperatures said they now expect a ‘lull’ for up to a decade while natural variations in climate cancel out the increases caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
“The average temperature of the sea around Europe and North America is expected to cool slightly over the decade while the tropical Pacific remains unchanged.
Strangest thing. That almost sounds like a mini-mini-Ice Age. Maybe a mini-mini-mini-Ice Age. Though looking at the brief timespan predicted, it could be a mini-mini-mini-mini-Ice Age. I dunno, I don’t want to get too technical and turn out any faux science. The real scientists will get jealous. You recall the mini-Ice Age in the Middle Ages, of course, several hundred years of cold weather we came out of right around the time of the Industrial Revolution, as it happens. Not to be confused with the big Ice Age 10,000 years ago. All part of the Earth’s natural cycle of cooling and warming, though. Hey, did you know that last time it was this warm, Jesus was here? Pretty cool.***
*** I wish I could find you that article, but it turns out Global Warming Temperature Jesus is a more productive search than I expected.

So much for the breathless prediction (and I’m not naming names, you understand, except that he lives in Tennessee some of the time) that the Earth is DOOMED within the next ten years if we don’t all drive Priuses (or maybe ride bicycles) and buy carbon offsets.

Didn’t they reacently admit that they didn’t know how to read the sea temperature data yet?

*recently*, gah!
My dictionary doesn’t work when I don’t read it!

The chicken littles are NOT going to be happy about this.
Not that I expect it to shut them up.

The idea that “Gaia..isn’t cooperating” is something to keep in mind over the next couple of years. It could be interesting, if solar cycle 24 turns out to be mild (we won’t know for about 2 years); and if the ocean circulation patterns in the Pacific and Atlantic shift to make the surface air temperatures a little less warm. The combination of factors may do more than accomplish the near plateau of surface air temperatures that we’ve seen for the past few years. It might get cooler, especially in North America and Europe — and it will take some explaining to get people to disbelieve their own eyes.

Oh no…..That means…..(Gasp)……Nuclear Winter!……Say it isn’t so!
Ok, you can say it is so, just don’t do it too loudly.

I have a bad feeling that this juggernaut is going to be damn near impossible to stop, now that it’s rolling.
I have this vision of myself five years from now, huddled around the stove in the (now typical) bitterly cold Winters, listening to politicians on the radio discuss more laws to curb global warmening.
