Emerging Pattern
Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Hillary’s in for the long haul. USA Today:
Hillary Rodham Clinton vowed Wednesday to continue her quest for the Democratic nomination, arguing she would be the stronger nominee because she appeals to a wider coalition of voters — including whites who have not supported Barack Obama in recent contests.
“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article “that found how Sen. Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.”“There’s a pattern emerging here,” she said.
There’s a pattern all right. It ain’t over till the last eyeball has been gouged. The article goes on to note that in signs of “unrest,” Feinstein mulled out loud whether emboldened delegates are less fearful of getting their eyeballs gouged out. More significantly, Democratic eminence geezer/albatross George McGovern bailed on Hillary for Obama. If anything, a clear omen she is the nominee. Russert’s declaration notwithstanding. Doddering old fool gets to keep his eyes. Russert will be dealt with later.
More reports:
NYT: This will be the Mother of all Clinton Comebacks … no, wait, that’s not what they said.
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton struck a publicly defiant posture on Wednesday about continuing her presidential bid despite waning support from Democratic officials and donors. Some of her advisers acknowledged privately that they remained unsure about the future of her candidacy.
With the political world trained on Mrs. Clinton’s financial and electoral viability, Senator Barack Obama moved closer to becoming the first African-American presidential nominee of a major party. Mr. Obama spent the day at home in Chicago, after increasing his delegate lead in Tuesday’s primaries — a result that led David Plouffe, a top Obama aide, to say on Wednesday, “We can see the finish line here.”
Kristof: The Too Long Goodbye. In short: We can blame her when we lose in November.
Ambinder, possibly afraid of having his eyes gouged out, in addition to maybe being embarrassed that he and virtually everyone else prematurely declared the candidacy dead, offers up an abashed dog-ate-my-homework rationale for why it makes sense for Hillary to stay in.
Tumulty at TIME, Five Mistakes Hill made. You know, thinking she was anointed, taking stuff for granted, misjudging blah blah blah. Here’s one mistake that Tumulty made that trumps Hill’s five: TIME scribbler forgot about the eye gouging!
Josh Marshall, TPM: Does Hillary really want the vice-presidency? No, you dolt, she wants to gouge his eyes out! This post is worth reading for the part where Marshall admits he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, however.
OK, we could go on all day, but you get the idea. She’s in, fingernails undulled. It’s over when the Clintons say it is. You can almost hear the breakfast table chat:
Bill: See this one, honey? “Too long goodbye.”
Hill: Buh-bye!
Bill: Plenty of time to gouge his eyes out later, sugarbuns. Oh, look here, seven reasons you should stay in.
Hill: Does he mention the eye-gouging?
Bill: Mmmm, lessee, no, no eye gouging, but he sounds awful skittish. Y’all ever flash a fingernail at this boy?
Related, not so different. Malkin: Superdelegate for sale. No one ever doubted they were whores, but now we’re talking business.
Surber: Hill bids for people who are smarter than Don but thinks they’re dumber.
Welcome Instapundit, Surberistas, etal. Always so good to see you. Come on in. This girl may have sowed her wild oats under the spotlight, but she’s so ambassadorable. Hamas kiddie TV brings the FuFu, KuKu. Guess who’s the YuYu. Like mob stories? This one’s full of cruel, heartless details. Here’s a campaign issue for Fall ‘08: Nukes in ‘09. Global warming crisis looms … how come no one told Gaia!

Sorry, just accidentally deleted a comment while clearing out spam. Reader noted the “I hate to say I told you so” line and commented, “No you don’t.”
Honestly, it pains me greatly to bear tidings of eye-gouging. And I fear a great and terrible eye gougement looms ahead.

Honestly, it’s not hard to see why she would want to stay in. She’s not far behind Obama in the popular vote, and even less so if you count Florida. Obama’s one serious scandal away from imploding, and given how little effort has been put into digging into his past, and his Chicago background, she knows that it’s not impossible for something extremely damaging to come to light at the last moment.

I agree, Fatty, her winning is possible. The odds are long, but it’s possible. But it’s only going to get uglier for the Donks.
I trust Dean is willing to exhibit some more of his firm leadership to keep the party from final meltdown. Or would that be the Lord Goreacle™ riding to save the day?
Whatever. I just needs me some more popcorn.

She’s lost the primary popular vote; she’s lost the delegate count: She thinks she should still be the candidate.
At least we know where she stands on the issue of democracy.

[...] UPDATE: Jules Crittenden sees things slightly differently than Mrs. Clinton. And by slightly, I mean 180 degrees. [...]

This is going to end up like the Five Families rubout at the end of The Godfather, with Chelsea as Michael taking care of the family business.

The eye gouging so far ain’t nothin’ compared to what’s coming. Pass that popcorn, will ya?

“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated” as Mark Twain said. Every primary since Massachusetts has been “do or die” for Hillary and not surprisingly she has done. As many have pointed out, Obama can’t deliver the final blow and seal the nomination.
Just as six months ago John McCain was dead in the water, four months from now Hillary will be the Democrat nominee.
