And below, it’s Europe in early 1945. Illustrates it pretty well. That’s Poland on the right, Belgium on the left. The gray part during the period in question was Germany, then still full of bucketheaded Siegfrieds, still considered armed and dangerous. Obama’s grandad is in one of those blue dotted lines. The red ones are full of Ivans. Note that the blue ones don’t go through Poland.
You know what they say. Those who don’t know history are doomed to make it up. Those who don’t know geography are doomed to get lost.
Dean at Weekly Standard’s The Blog ponders the deeper gaffeness of it all, concludes it’s not such a big deal, but I think point No. 3 about fundamental ignorance might be a problem, to the extent you want your president to have a grasp of history. Actually knowing what you’re talking about isn’t everything, though:
But wait, it is I who am the dummkopf! Grandad marched in Patton’s army. Great uncle Charlie liberated Buchenwald with the 89th Infantry Division. Grandma worked in a bomber factory. Sounds like pretty illustrious wartime service up the maternal tree. Grandad, great uncle, Patton, 89th, Red Army, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, easy to see how it all gets mixed up.
