Una Verità Inopportuna!
Bravo, Maestro! La Scala will stage the operatic version of “An Inconvenient Truth.”
It’s pure genius! An overly ornate stageset, under hot lights, peopled by fat, costumed, sweaty, warbling, excessively emoting Italians may well be the best way to artistically capture the essence of Al Gore’s vision.
Lots of drama, wailing, gnashing of teeth and rending of garments, with heartbreaking scenes of drowning polar bears, hurricanes, increasing competition over scarce resources, demise of the human race, etc. Then, when all seems lost, the enNobeled laureate, with his chorus of white-coated scientists and a host of smelly forest dwellers scurrying about and striking alarmed poses in the wings, restores sanity to this benighted world on the brink of self destruction, inspiring legions of spear-holding bureaucrats, engineers, corporate executives to unite, abandon their evil ways and avert disaster. Just thinking of it makes me want to break into song!
FiGore-o, Figore-o, FiiiiiiGore-oooooo!!!
Good thing you can’t hear that. I’m no Pavarotti. Your bad opera jokes and librettos welcomed in comments. I don’t know anything about opera, but I bet you could get a pretty good aria about global warming skeptics out of this:
“They are almost like the ones who believe the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona!
“They are almost like the ones who believe the Earth is flat!

“Flat! Flat! They believe the earth is flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! La landing del Luna … staged in Arizona! In Arizona! Ar-i-zo-oh-oh-oh … oh-oh-oh-oh … oh-oh-oh-oh … OH-OH-ONA!

(Wild applause, the audience is on its feet. Grown men weep unabashedly. There is a throwing of bouquets, ladies’ delicate personal items)
Thank you! Thank you! I love you! You are so beautiful! Please, no more!

[...] Inconvenient Truth is going to be a dreadful opera. I still say if things are as bad as Gore et al vaunt, there should be no public concerts or [...]

How about changing that old saw to “It ain’t over until the fat dude sings”?

Somehow, opera just seems so right for “An Inconvenient Truth”, and Al Gore, and the whole overwrought panic-stricken environmental movement.
(For the record, I like opera, having been forced to listen to the Dallas Metropolitan Opera on the radio on Saturday mornings by my art teacher — probably the only kid in my little Texas town that ever heard it.)
