One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Kuwaiti parliament refers the case of two women legislators who failed to wear the hijab to its legal committee. At issue, whether they broke the law requiring them to ”abide by Islamic regulations while voting or contesting the elections.” Nine Islamist lawmakers walked out upon laying eyes upon women’s hair. Ah, yes, Kuwait, the land of conflicting religious values.
Alcohol is illegal, and G-d help the Westerner who tries to smuggle booze in during Ramadan (happened once that I know of…..guy was lucky to simply get put on the next plane home). But the Kuwaitis drive out into the desert to get blasted, and you can order drinks at some restaurants if you know the code words.
P0rn is illegal, but I knew one Kuwaiti with a pa$$ion (heh heh!) for collecting various productions.
The Government of Kuwait donated much of the fuel for Iraq operations for several years (as of 2005), but there are parts of the country where Americans had best not walk….especially in uniform.
And I had to admire their ability squeeze us Yanks for every dinar they could. The US Army cleaned up virtually all remains of Desert Storm and OIF from the northern half of Kuwait, virtually all desert, including the old Iraqi fortifications.
But back OT……the great debate about giving women the vote was going on in 2005, my section had a lot of contact with the Emira, the sister to the Emir. She was big into environmental restoration. At one ceremony, she pinned a badge, adorned with Arabic script, on the section chief, and was photographed with him wearing it.
What did the badge say? “Give women the vote!” The chief had a good laugh over that one!

Which brings to mind a story bin Laden’s sister in law tells (married to one of Osama’s many brothers, she has written a book)
She answered the door to Osama’s knock unveiled and he turned his face away in horror.
Besides the hypocrisy in lifestyle noted above (”the Saudis” are similarly hypocritical when it comes to indulging their seamier side), have I mentioned that these people are nuts ?
