New Story Line

Washington Post’s Froomkin, “A Timetable By Any Other Name,” posits an exiting Bush has caved on withdrawal timetable, adopting a longheld Dem position.

While people who work at the Washington Post are supposed to be smaht, this one failed to notice that the Dems wanted to pull out ASAP when they thought we were losing, without regard to consequences. Their presumptive nominee still holds all of those positions and assumptions. All of this has been intended to win domestic votes.

The column actually notes that Bush is negotiating with the sovereign government of Iraq a pullout that remains conditional on facts on the ground, and is seeking terms that will allow the United States to maintain both influence and a significant presence. As opposed to either abandoning that government or unilaterally imposing his will upon it. All of which makes Froomkin’s view of the matter more confusing. Apparently these facts are insufficient to unfix the scribbler’s grip on the phrase “withdrawal timetable,” and the potential as a snark bludgeon its indiscriminate wielding affords. Which means we have to assume he’s either intellectually dishonest or an incompetent boob. It isn’t the first time that sometimes difficult choice has been forced on us, presenting us with one of the more pressing and persistent questions of Iraq war coverage.
