Hair Plugs Don’t Bounce
Obama-Biden ‘08 going nowhere fast. Post-announcement poll shows Biden choice sucking whatever life was left out of Obama’s campaign. CNN:
DENVER, Colorado (CNN) — It’s a dead heat in the race for the White House. The first national poll conducted entirely after Barack Obama publicly named Joe Biden as his running mate suggests that battle for the presidency between the Illinois senator and Republican rival John McCain is all tied up.
In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Sunday night, 47 percent of those questioned are backing Obama with an equal amount supporting the Arizona senator.
“This looks like a step backward for Obama, who had a 51 to 44 percent advantage last month,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
“Even last week, just before his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate became known, most polls tended to show Obama with a single-digit advantage over McCain,” adds Holland.
So what’s the difference now?
It may be supporters of Hillary Clinton, who still would prefer the Senator from New York as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
Sixty-six percent of Clinton supporters, registered Democrats who want Clinton as the nominee, are now backing Obama. That’s down from 75 percent in the end of June. Twenty-seven percent of them now say they’ll support McCain, up from 16 percent in late June.
“The number of Clinton Democrats who say they would vote for McCain has gone up 11 points since June, enough to account for most although not all of the support McCain has gained in that time,” says Holland.
Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. OK, not quite octogenarian Ted Kennedy bravely battling brain cancer is on tonight. Demo crowd-pleaser/ eminence gris should stir, rally and unify for maybe five minutes. There’s Michelle Obama … presumeably wired for helpful anti-ad lib electric shock … and John Kerry … thanks for the memories! Then there’s Bill. Better be ready to taser the daylights out of him. It actually sounds like some pretty good viewing … for Republicans. I dunno, they better have some strippers or a screening of “Flubber” or something lined up if they want to get any bounce out of that convention in Denver.
Kristol at NYT: Anguished cries after “a pick from weakness.”
Politico: Tensions boil between Clinton, Obama camps. No kidding?
Washington Post: “Experience is a double-edged sword” … careful you don’t fall on it.
A choice so bad you can see it from all the way across the pond. Times of London on Biden: No threat, no asset.
OK, now some Obamadoration:
Bloomberg: Obama’s Edge Lies in Character, Self-Discipline. A string of platitudes that fail to include numerous lapses of character, self-discipline that dot the Obama history and campaign. Calls him smart as (Bill) Clinton, but I suspect Clinotn would have been smart enough to … choose Clinton. Unilaterally, posthumously bestows Jefferson’s endorsement. Bloomberg exec editor’s piece appears to have been scribbled prior to exiting to the Outer Banks Friday. No mention of Biden, who apparently hasn’t helped hone the edge on that butter knife.
E.J. Dionne, who was working over the weekend, tries to look on the bright side of Biden. Cites, but dances around a big Biden problem. He’s everything Obama ran against.
With thanks to Memeorandum, RCP on the roundup.

Obama’s managed to pick someone almost as narcissistic as himself, if not more so. That old my-IQ-is-higher-than-yours video says it all about Biden, really.
My only question now is, will the Clintonistas stage a revolt at the DNC? Or will she bide her time?
It’s gonna be an interesting week.

I could live with a McCain/Lieberman ticket. And so what if Sarah Palin has only been in office two years? That certainly was enough experience for Obama to run for president.
Btw, the Politico link leads to the Kristol link.

Did you hear the one about McCain trying to remember how many houses he has?
Yea, its about as funny as O’s thinking there’s 57 states.

From the WaPo piece linked: “Biden will also broaden the range of advice Obama is receiving. ” This strikes me as hilarious–he already has way too many advisors.
mwl, love your point about the all-narcissist ticket! On the Hillary question, I have been wondering the same thing–I won’t be shocked if she ends up with the nomination, but I think the best guess is that she is selling for 2012. I think she is probably thrilled to see Obama going down so that she can run against McCain in four years.
I don’t see why anyone is surprised that it’s a dead heat. I think it would be roughly 50-50 no matter who the candidates were, because this election is largely a referendum on the direction of our culture, and we seem to be split roughly in half on that. Broad brush, it’s aging hippies vs. neoconservatives (and the kids who model themselves after one or the other). To be rude about it, it’s those of us who woke up after the atrocities of September 11, 2001 (I refuse to use the conventional shorthand, it’s not an effing brand name) vs. those of us who didn’t.
A gentle reminder to my esteemed fellow commenters: Please to ignore the trolls. Only thing for it.
