Dutch Step Aside …
… to make way for US UAV wack vs mullahs. JPost:
The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran’s weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country’s De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.
The report claimed that the Dutch operation had been “extremely successful,” and had been stopped because the US military was planning to hit targets that were “connected with the Dutch espionage action.”
The impending air-strike on Iran was to be carried out by unmanned aircraft “within weeks,” the report claimed, quoting “well placed” sources.
via Powerline. I’m not sure which part I’m having more trouble believing. Dutch infiltration/sabotage ops, or the idea that the U.S. is planning a strike at this late date, mid-election. Both would be welcome news, though the latter is risky policy that for political purposes better have a lot of smiling Euros onside. Techies with opinions on the matter are invited to chime in on whether UAVs are up to the task.
But George, while you’re at it, how about one stray Hellfire into North Ossetia? Just one, to Russia with love.
Meanwhile, here’s the Iranian reax, compliments of Israel Today. Also, the Israelis, not to be outdone, have their own plans:
While the report did not mention any potential Israeli involvement in the impending US military strike, Israel’s Ma’ariv daily newspaper reported on Friday that Jerusalem had reached a strategic decision to deny Iran nuclear weapons at all costs and by any means.
The Ma’ariv report stated that independent of other efforts by Western powers, Israel had begun preparations for its own possible strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Responding to the latest reports, the deputy chief of staff of the Iranian military, General Masoud Jazayeri, said on Saturday that any attack on his nation would result in World War III.
Speaking to Iran’s IRNA news agency, Jazayeri warned that in the event of an attack on Iran, Israel and the US “will be eliminated before anything.”

I’m no techie, but it does seem unbelievable that the US would launch an attack on Iran just before an election. Unless the administration knows something we don’t.

Agreed–hard to believe on both points. And, frankly, if by some magic the Dutch have managed to effectively infiltrate the Iranian’s arms program sufficient to disrupt it, it is obvious to all that we should let them carry on, isn’t it?
But as Rebecca says, unless they know something we don’t. (Which, of course, they do. They know much that we don’t.)
