An Inconvenient Prediction

Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a cold winter kicking off early for Thanksgiving. A couple of warm spring months, and we’re back into a cold summer and fall up this way.

Winter will be colder than normal, on average, primarily due to persistent cold temperatures throughout December. Other cold periods will occur in early and mid- to late January, early and mid-February, and early March. Precipitation will be near or slightly above normal, with below-normal snowfall in the north and above-normal snowfall in the south. The biggest snowstorm will occur in early March, with other snowy periods in late November, mid- and late December, early and late January, and mid-February.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say it almost sounds like that Little Ice Age might be kicking in. Nah … that’s crazy talk.

Hang on. via Boston Herald, OFA thinks we’re headed into a decades-long cooling trend.

The news agency that conducted this interview characterized OFA as going “further out on a limb than usual this year, not only forecasting a cooler winter but looking ahead decades to suggest we are in for global cooling, not warming.” I think they meant “farther,” though I suppose reasonable people could dicker about that without anyone losing his research grant. But that’s beside the point. Are they trying to suggest that theories about global warming are some kind of settled science or orthodoxy?

OFA relies on a formula more than 200 years old that incorporates the study of sunspots and other factors they don’t reveal. They claim an 80 percent accuracy rate in their predictions. I’m not sure the Goracle can do the same.

Well, for what it’s worth, we had a cooler summer than normal here in SW Ohio. It’s not even quite the middle of September and the hummingbirds and goldfinches have already disappeared. In the middle of July, there were already numerous spider webs in the grass, when you usually don’t see them like that until late August.

Not exactly scientific, I know, but then not everybody can rely on sophisticated computer models.
