Oh, come on. Coming on the heels of the pit bull/lipstick joke at the convention, there is no doubt Obama was trying to rattle the McCain campaign’s cage, knowing he could maintain plausible deniability.

Your reference to “Sadly, A Moron,” rung a distant bell.

Three years back I referred to “Sadly, No” as “Sadly, No Brain” in response to their keen analysis of MY keen analysis of the tsunami in terms of learning from past mistakes:

Ol’ Sissy Willis at Sisu, the rightbloggers’ answer to the designy lifestyle publication, has once again been hypnotized by the shiny, beaten-brass dangly-thing at the end of her pentatonic wind chimes.

I will say that I’ve always been one to peck at shiny objects.

He knew what he was saying, and so did everybody else. Even Mark up there, as much as he wants to pretend otherwise. Obama was trying to be clever, with “lipstick on a pig” referring to Palin’s joke the other night, and “old fish” referring to McCain. I don’t consider it to be sexist, just crude.

I’m not sure what to make of Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” remark. It’s an old phrase, yes, but as a skilled politician who knows how to work a crowd, he surely knew what conclusion his supporters would draw from that, as he should have known what the reaction of a whole lot of undecided women would be. If he’s rattled now, he has only himself to blame.

Obama: “John McCain says he’s about change too, and so I guess his whole angle is, ‘Watch out George Bush — except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics — we’re really going to shake things up in Washington,’” he said.

“That’s not change. That’s just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You know you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it’s still going to stink after eight years. We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

Where’s the reference to Sarah Palin? There isn’t any. It’s a common phrase and Obama even explained the context. So common even John McCain has been known to use it.

John McCain: In Iowa last October, McCain drew comparisons between Hillary Clinton’s current health care plan and the one she championed in 1993: “I think they put some lipstick on the pig, but it’s still a pig.” He used the same line in May.

John McCain would be an even worse president than Bush. He seems to be trying to prove it by the dishonest way he’s running his campaign. He’d rather lose his honor than lose a campaign.

I don’t think too much of the comment either. But I DO think McCain should make something out of it for a few days.

Why? Because every single time a Republican misspeaks, the press makes hay out of it. Does anyone REALLY think George Allen had ANY idea about the connotations of “macaca?” C’mon, really????

Yet George Allen is not a U.S. Senator today.

To be honest, to understand that comment was hurtful would have required Allen to be in touch with and have knowledge of minority communities. Since Allen was always rapped for NOT having that familiarity, it was then disingenuous to come back and rap him on the knuckles for the comment. Allen thought he was being funny, instead he was being tone-deaf.

But aren’t we hearing all the time how articulate and smart Obama is? Well, let Mr. “57 states” prove it to all the “sweeties” out there.

That’s politics, baby. It’s not racism when you misspeak and others point it out. It’s honesty.
