I Am Sam?
Prosecutors get hinky about the Clark Rockefeller/Christian Gerhartsreiter/Son of Sam identity theft claim. Now, they say they spoke too soon. Could be SOS, could be some other David Berkowitz’s social security number that Crock misappropriated. They haven’t figured it out yet. Boston Herald:
Prosecutors are backing off a claim that accused kidnapper and erstwhile Rockefeller Christian Gerhartsreiter once used the Social Security number of convicted serial killer David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz.
But they’re not denying he did, either.
“He used a Social Security number that belonged to a David Berkowitz,” said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley spokesman Jake Wark. “It’s not at all clear if it’s the Son of Sam.”
During a Thursday hearing in Suffolk Superior Court, prosecutors used a list of Gerhartsreiter’s multiple aliases to convince a judge that he could easily disappear if let go. The judge ordered him held without bail.
Among those aliases was David Berkowitz, which is the name of the infamous New York serial killer who claimed his dog ordered him to carry out multiple Big Apple slayings.
Mark Jay Heller, a lawyer for the serial killer, told the Herald in August that a man with an accent had contacted him years ago and asked for Berkowitz’s Social Security number.
“I got a call some years back, somewhere in the mid-’80s, from someone who seemed to believe he was a relative of David Berkowitz and was looking to get his Social Security number and basically confirm it,” Heller said. “I thought it very odd that he would be calling me to get someone else’s Social Security number; he was very aggressive about it. He did have somewhat of an arrogance in his tone.”
Heller said the man also had a foreign accent that he could not quite place. He said the call stuck with him and he believes it was Gerhartsreiter.

What’s the holdup here? He’s clearly not a David Berkowitz of any parentage. Deport the bastard. Hopefully the Germans will grab him off the plane and stick him in some safe, secure psychiatric facility, or better yet, one of their atrocious prisons.
