A Lady First
Despite NYT’s best effort to let you know she’s the second wife, she’s blonde, she’s a Diana wannabe, she’s been a social outsider if not an outcast in D.C., they are unable to make Cindy McCain look like anything less than a decent, conscientious and honorable woman who has struggled with serious issues for better and for worse despite her position of privilege in life, and has tried to do good in the world. She actually comes off looking pretty good.
From the start, Mrs. McCain’s marriage has been defined by her husband’s ambitions, and despite her sometimes punishing ride in political life, she does whatever she must to help fulfill them. As his poll numbers have slid recently, her devotion has seemed only to grow. When the McCain campaign recently stepped up attacks on Senator Barack Obama, Mrs. McCain joined in with startling intensity. The day after the second presidential, which did not turn around Mr. McCain’s standing in the polls, she interrupted a Fox News interview he was doing to testify to his virtues. At this late date, Mrs. McCain is starting to headline her own rallies, starting in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“She would walk on broken glass barefoot if it required her to do so in this campaign,” said Matt Salmon, a former Arizona congressman who knows the couple.
I’m still trying to understand why being socially uncomfortable in Washington D.C. and prefering to be elsewhere is a negative, but I get the impression from this profile that it is. Ditto wanting to model yourself on “another blonde, glamorous figure married to an older man,” Diana, who made the best of a lousy job, under highly adverse circumstances. Also, where they got the idea that McCain has slid in the polls. A couple of points in a statistical dead heat do not a slide make, though I noticed Obama dropped a few after that debate they mention that failed to rocket McCain ahead.
Good move, by the way, Cindy, turning down the interview. They did their best to make you look like a wallflower of trophy wife, but all they got in on that were superficial hits. They’d only want to make you squirm, and ask about a lot of stuff that is none of their business.
Ed at Hotair with some of the Facebook trolling for dirt among teens the NYT scribbler did.

Interesting article but I was often distracted by the unfinished anecdotes, and the significant details not mentioned. It is unfortunate that the Times was unable to devote sufficient time and resources to it, making it an uncomprehensive report.

Their crack team of investigative reporters was too busy trying to dig up dirt (or invent it) in Wasilla, Alaska. What effort was left from trying to smear Palin had to be devoted to smearing a plumber. Dammit, the top reporters can’t be everywhere at once.
