Harvard brainiacs are living up to their left-leaning reputation and have stuffed famed alum Barack Obama’s war chest with more than $500,000, making them the Democrat’s third largest contributors.

“Sounds like Harvard could use a lesson from Joe the Plumber,” said Jeff Grappone, the New England spokesman for John McCain’s campaign. “It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Barack Obama’s plans for higher taxes and more federal spending will kill jobs for those outside academia.”

Harvard academics have given Obama $501,489 from Jan. 1, 2007, to Aug. 31, according to the latest figures available by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group based in Washington, D.C. Only about two dozen of McCain’s donors list Harvard as their employer.

During the 2004 White House race, Harvard intellectuals were John Kerry’s second largest contributors, forking over $355,359 to the liberal Massachusetts senator, according to the center.

“The Obama campaign has completely shattered all previous fund-raising efforts without a dime from PACs or Washington lobbyists by building an unprecedented base of more than 2.5 million Americans who are hungry for change and know we can’t afford four more years of the same Bush policies,” said Gannet Tseggai, a spokeswoman for the Obama campaign.

Obama is a 1991 Harvard Law School graduate and was the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review.

“It must be something very special stimulating us,” said Robert Brustein, who donated $1,250 to the Obama campaign and founded the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. “With me, it’s just the belief that this country has to be turned around.”

Harvard law professor Robert Mnookin, chairman of the university’s Program on Negotiation, has given Obama $4,600. “I would be supporting him with the same enthusiasm had he gone to that other place - Yale,” Mnookin said.

Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, said Obama has major Harvard support because he’s a graduate, the Harvard faculty is “overwhelmingly” Democratic and salaries at the senior level are “quite generous.”

Republican political consultant Jim Nuzzo said the late conservative icon William Buckley was right.

“William Buckley said that he’d rather be governed by the first 300 names from the Boston phonebook than the faculty of Harvard University. He was right 30 years ago. He’s right now,” said Nuzzo, who holds a law degree from Harvard.

I think it might have been the first 400 names. How about the last 400 of the Toledo phonebook, however many it takes to get a Cabinet post for Joe Wurzelbacher? Anyway, it is hardly news that Harvard is solidly in the socialist camp of incredibly bad domestic policy proposals, just as it is in the surrender camp of incredibly bad foreign policy thinking. It’s not just that Harvard is aggressively left-leaning, a font of incredibly bad ideas. Harvard and some other Ivy League schools also have been aggressively pro-Jihadi. Because is not simply an academic argument to say that antipathy to national self-defense interests in time of war aids and abets the enemy.

McCain warns Obama’$ flood of ca$h will lead to $candal. It’s more than just sour grapes and McCain’s own troubled efforts to stifle campaign spending talking. Politico:

Obama announced Sunday morning that he pulled in $150 million in September, which McCain described on “Fox News Sunday” as “completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the cost and spending on campaigns under control. First time, first time since the Watergate scandal. And I can tell you this: that has unleashed now in presidential campaigna a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal and then we will fix it again. But Sen. Obama has broken it.”

The Republican senator from Arizona was referring both to Obama’s reversal on a pledge to participate a system that gave McCain’s campaign $84 million in taxpayer money but limited his spending to that amount, and also to recent news reports highlighting over-the-limit contributions to Obama given in under-$200 installments from previously undisclosed small donors. Some were fictitious and had listed names such as “Doodad Pro” and “Good Will.”

And they said Mickey Mouse can’t vote.

I am thankful that I had chosen a career in physics that supported our national defense rather than our indefensible academic frauds. What a cesspool of disingenuous blowhards, from the Columbia’s depraved indifference to obscene intentions against humanity [http://hl98.blogspot.com/2007/09/to-president-of-columbia-university.html] to similar outrages against sanity throughout the halls of ivy and beyond.

    I’m going to barf now.

The actual number cited by Buckley was 2,000. But his point stands.

The thing to remember about academics — whether they are Ivy League, or from flyover country universities and colleges — is that, while they may have done some research, or even a little practical work, in order to get published, in order to get tenure, the vast majority of them have spent their entire lives in the classroom. “Ivory Tower” doesn’t even begin to describe it. “Nursery” or “Hothouse” are better descriptions.

Is that the same Harvard Obama attended when he accumulated lots of parking tickets that he only paid back when he decided to run for president? Such audacity!
