“Huge Threat”
Times of London is talking about al-Qaeda’s love of post-election violence and expectations of a test for Obama. It’s actually the Biden Effect, which of course is something he lifted from the Bush administration, now being echoed back by the Bushites.
It’s the awareness that we have enemies who wish to do us ill, and try to induce panic and maybe frighten us off. There is also al-Qaeda’s need to belatedly cast its absentee ballot … straight Great Satan ticket … and show that they are also transitioning. Said threat will only get more huge if the Obama administration actually carries out any of its campaign promises … shutting down Guantanamo and let everyone out, shutting down Iraq, opening arms to Iran. There are glimmerings that the incoming admin may be open to considering common sense, but the hugest threat of remains the prospect for incidents of spectacular moronocy in Washington DC.
Turns out governing in wartime is hard. NYT on the wringing of hands by handwringers who wanted it, got it, and now don’t know what to do with it. Guantanamo.
Possible good news for Obama. The Iraqi cabinet is set to vote on a deal that could keep the hated Crusaders in Iraq for three more years. They may graciously take the heat off that issue, make his mind up for him.
Bad news, via the Washington Post, where experts see a security risk in the economic downturn, as governments are made more fragile and our ability to respond is limited. Here’s a thought. It’s wartime. More guns, less butter.

Even some liberals are arguing that to deal realistically with terrorism, the new administration should seek Congressional authority for preventive detention of terrorism suspects deemed too dangerous to release even if they cannot be successfully prosecuted.
Gosh, you mean in some prison like… Guantanamo, with that nice 90-mile stretch of ocean between us and them?

I think it might be good news for the rest of us if the Iraqis and the Bush administration can come to a deal. I would rather Bush made that call than Obama. Obama worries me.

I seem to recall that it was World War II that finally got America’s industrial capacity re-engaged and pulled us out of the Great Depression. But that might be a heretical thought these days.
