Thumbs Up On Downsizing

Mexican border-crossing is down 42 percent in the last two years, from 1.2 million to 800,000. That’s all Mexicans who left the country, whether legally or otherwise. AP, noting that most are border-hopping illegals headed north,* reports that U.S. economic woes and tighter border security are to blame for fewer people seeking to become document-challenged Americans.

* ”The vast majority of Mexican migrants go to the United States,” if you prefer.

Speaking of dropping numbers of undesireables, the AP is reducing its workforce by 10 percent, for a cut of 400 of its 4000 staff by 2010, mainly by attrition. This is unfortunate. I would rather the AP were hiring. Specifically, people who understand what the basic mission of an international wire service is, and might attempt to fulfill it without carrying water for Democratic presidential candidates and congressional leaders, race-baiters, unrepentant 1960s terrorists, various and sundry other lefty banner carriers and International Jihad. Seeing as they are unlikely to do the latter, they might as well continue with the former.

Welcome Instapundit, etal. Always good to see you.  Come on in. There’s a French soldier with something to tell you about American grunts. You know about DoD’s important Faux Coconut research, right? It’s a military artifical intelligence thing. No jokes please. Corruption is also big in local news today: Boston City Council War Crimes/Hungarian Porn Activist Busted! Also, Pay As We Say … not as they don’t.

I thought AP was the only joint making money.

I can think of some deadweight they should toss off the truck sooner rather than later. Only 10 percent, huh?

On the other hand, worldwide recession might spur an increase in legal immigration, which would be fine.
