AP Standards

Glad to hear they have some. AP’s unhappy because the Army photoshopped in an American flag in that headshot of Gen. Dunwoody. Which was kind of dumb of someone in the Army, because it looks hokey and contrived. The AP, on the otherhand, is hardly in a position to squawk about adding and subtracting content. Daily Tech

AP’s director of photography Santiago Lyon said, “For us, there’s a zero-tolerance policy of adding or subtracting actual content from an image.” Lyon says that the AP was in the process of developing procedures to protect against this sort of thing happening in the future and that after these procedures were in place he would consider lifting the ban on DoD photos.

That’s admirable, but apparently it applies to photos only. The AP’s discriptions of unrepentant ex-terrorist Bill Ayers left out the fact that his “radical” group murdered several cops, security guards and a civilian bystander (subtracted content). It suggested Sarah Palin was a racist because she criticized Barack Obama’s association with Ayers (added content). It obsessed on indicators of anti-Obama racism while burying references to anti-Clinton sexism and pro-Obama racism (distorted content) … which given the ultimate result probably calls for some soul-searching and mea culpa on their part and others about the willingness to disparage American voters. It failed to acknowledge for months that the United States had al-Qaeda on the run and was in fact winning in Iraq (subtracted content), instead insisting al-Qaeda was “resilient” (added content). It spent years painstakingly tallying the “grim milestones” of American war dead while ignoring the vastly greater number of enemy dead, and placing an intense focus on those innocent civilians accidentally killed by Americans, while devoting considerably less attention to the fact that the enemy tactics put those civilians in that harm’s way, when the enemy wasn’t purposefully killing civilians itself. Also, like many others, obsessing on isolated cases of abuses by Americans, while taking al-Qaeda savagery for granted.

Oh yeah, I forgot, they also routinely refer to people who wade through rivers in their underwear, shimmy under, climb over or bust through fences, jam themselves into panel trucks, or are snuck through the desert by crminals as “immigrants,” ignoring their official status as “illegal aliens,” and ignoring the fact that “immigration” describes a legal process involving standing in line, filling out papers, and getting official stamps of approval prior to crossing borders (misrepresented content).

One Response to “AP Standards”

  1. J.M. Heinrichs Says:

Now, if a Canadian flag had been used, then it would not have been noted.

    Cheers
