Smart Brit

On the difference between America and Britain in Iraq, a thing or two Britain could learn from America and from Iraq, posits Britain has “lost its stomach for a fight.” Harsh view falls apart a little at the end, though…

… in fact appears to fall for the abandonment school of thought where he suggests Afghanistan may have to be written off with half measures. Having made the argument that giving up = losing, he seems to fail to get that giving up = losing, seems resigned to a useless Britain and an unwinnable war, but hopeful that charm with carry the day. Unless he is subtly trying to suggest that giving up and relying on charm = losing. Read the whole thing by Michael Portillo at Times of London.

Looks like Obama, having graduated from charm school and dealing with the real world, may have other plans. AP: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is looking at up to 30,000 more for Afghanistan next year. Dilegge at Small Wars Journal reacting to Portillo notes Brit, Canadian, Aussie and Yank military counterinsurgency specialists are working together on lessons learned. Sounds great, except the best car in the world goes nowhere if no one wants to step on the gas. Sounds like maybe Obama should use that charm to get the Brits etal back on board.

Hot Air, lack of political will isn’t just a Brit problem. Steyn, “the question is whether a nation that’s ‘lost the stomach for a fight’ has also lost its survival instinct.”
