Sharia Fort Dix Verdict …

… al-Hijinks! Apparently the Crusader jury got it wrong when it found the Fort Dix Five guilty of conspiracy to murder American soldiers. AP helpfully plays “Ask the Imam.” via Newsday

Yes, they talked tough, fired guns and watched jihadist videos.

Kids these days!

But the five young Muslims convicted Monday of plotting to kill soldiers at Fort Dix may not have been guilty of anything more than youthful braggadocio and poor judgment.

That was the verdict rendered by Muslim leaders immediately after the guilty verdicts were read in U.S. District Court in Camden.

One problem. I don’t believe the Muslim leaders were actually on the jury. The “poor judgment” thing sounds about right, though. But let’s ask the Imam:

“It seemed to me as if the case was pretty flimsy,” said James Yee, the former Muslim chaplain at the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba who was arrested in 2003 and charged with mishandling classified material and other crimes in a suspected espionage ring. Criminal charges were later dropped against him.

“It seems like these guys under normal circumstances weren’t going to do anything until a government informant initiates contact with them and incites them,” said Yee.

“All of this doesn’t help build trust with the American Muslim community, and that is vital if our law enforcement is going to fight terrorism,” he said. “If anyone can improve security, it’s our community, but we need to be seen as trusted partners, not potential suspects.”

Speaking of poor judgment, AP seems to be exercising some in it’s choice of James, aka Yusuf, Yee. Not exactly an objective bystander. AP, in noting that all criminal charges were dropped against Yee, negelects to add that military officials said repeatedly they did do it because they think he was innocent, but prefered not to make public sensitive information.

Maybe AP can find some Muslims who think playing with guns in the woods and talking jihad doesn’t help build trust with the American non-Muslim community, especially in the post-9/11 era. Let’s try this one:

Mohamed Younes, president of the Paterson, N.J.-based American Muslin Union, voiced similar sentiments.

“I don’t think they actually mean to do anything,” he said. “I think they were acting stupid, like they thought the whole thing was a joke. They don’t look like the type of people to do something like this.”

Well, the joke’s on them. Have to keep looking for Muslims who think talking jihad and playing with guns is dumb.

Hey, how about this guy from the Albanian community of New Jersey. Why’d the AP bury him?

Fuat “Mike” Mamo of Cresskill said the Albanian community in New Jersey is ashamed of the three Albanian brothers who were convicted.

“I don’t know what they were thinking,” Mamo said of the Duka brothers. “They were just out of their mind and they should be put away for life. The Albanian community is nothing like this.

“We come from a country that has a reputation for religious diversity and tolerance. To go against the American government – that’s unacceptable to our community.”

Thanks, Mike. It’s refreshing to see a sense of shame in this country. No one seems to have one anymore. But it’s OK, you don’t need to feel shame. We know a lot of Muslims are good Americans, or good guys trying to beomce Americans, who care about this country and know better than that run around in the woods with guns, talking jihad.

Looking around, haven’t seen that the AP has managed to locate any of the tens of thousands of National Guardsmen who have been processed through Fort Dix on their way to Iraq, and the soldiers assigned there who were the targets of this conspiracy, or the families that would have had to bury them.

But, for Mike’s sake, we’ll close with a great American Muslim who also liked to run around in the woods with guns. The kind of guy the Fort Dix Five conspired to kill: Lt. Mohsin Naqvi, 10th Mountain, KIA Afghanistan, Sept. 17, 2008.

Gateway notes several of these guys not only weren’t Americans, they weren’t here legally. Now, if they want to run around playing with guns and talking jihad in Albania

When we do not have the will to enforce our own laws on those here illegally, it’s a little heartening to see we will at least try to stop them from actively killing us.

At this point, after all the Islamic jihad being waged around the world, and the top 100 terrorists wanted by the FBI being Muslim, I’d say it’s up to American Muslims to work toward building trust with American non-Muslims, not the other way around.
