Important Sense Of Presidential Urgency

President Barack Obama to you, the American people. Washington Post op-ed highlights:

What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches the urgency they feel in their daily lives — action that’s swift, bold and wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis.

Because each day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes. And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

Gotta admit, he sounds presidential. Remember FDR? “We have nothing to fear but fear itself!” BHO updates it for a new, more sophisticated era. “Panic now!”*

That’s why I feel such a sense of urgency about the recovery plan before Congress. With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, provide immediate tax relief to 95 percent of American workers, ignite spending by businesses and consumers alike, and take steps to strengthen our country for years to come.

And because we know that a lot of the things we might have wanted to spend lots of your money on now no longer have a prayer, that’s why I have urgently endeavored to jam as much of the Democratic agenda into this recovery plan as humanly possible, while accusing the Republicans of cheesy politics, while also pretending like my own stuff doesn’t stink.

Ha ha, just kidding. He didn’t really say that last bit. I made that up. Sounds good, though.

Hang on, Maybe he did say that:

So we have a choice to make. We can once again let Washington’s bad habits stand in the way of progress. Or we can pull together and say that in America, our destiny isn’t written for us but by us. We can place good ideas ahead of old ideological battles, and a sense of purpose above the same narrow partisanship. We can act boldly to turn crisis into opportunity and, together, write the next great chapter in our history and meet the test of our time.

It is clear now that your president, on the verge of bollixing his first major initiative … aside from the ones about letting jihadis go and making kissy face with mullahs, also some environmental nonsense, your money for abortions in other countries, and a bunch of tax cheats for high office and, there’s probably more but I’m having trouble keeping track … needs you, the American people, to weigh in. Judging by the polls, that might not work out too well. I hope he stuck this thing on YouTube and Twittered it and didn’t just leave it in the Washington Post, because I think a lot of the people who read it there, to judge by the polls, are going to be among those who aren’t buying it and the president is going to need the vital support of those people who still think being “cool” is a qualification for leadership of the free world.

Don’t worry, none of them will have read this. Washington Times, CBO: Obama Stimulus Harmful Over The Long Haul.

via Malkin, Reid doing what Reid does best … waffle … in this case over whether he can pass this thing. Latest is he has the votes including a couple from the GOP. Also, newly opposed to governing by poll …

Sounds like a good time to cork the opposition … or their talk radio taskmasters, anyway. Politico, Dem senator calls for “balance.”

The university communications instructor also known as Balloon Juice: I don’t understand people who enjoy eating tires, as I once did. People who believe the things I did, until recently, such as tires are tasty, must be insane. How on earth are we supposed to be bi-partisan with tire-eating people like I was, say, a year or two ago? (It’s OK, John, as far as I’m concerned your best tire-eating years are still ahead of you.)

* Looks like a Reynolds reader beat me to that unfortunate gag. Too bad as many as two of us even thought of it. Make that three. Drudge: “THE FEAR: PASS IT NOW OR WE MAY NEVER RECOVER.”

OK, fourth time’s a charm. Surber may have pegged it: “The only thing we have is fear!”

They’re like cockroaches in a dirty kitchen when the lights are turned on. I, for one, think it’s time for a serious fumigation.
