Important Earnestness

Weird photo essay at Boston.com, the Boston Globe’s site, explains how dictators are threatened by Obama, who is “killing them with kindness.”

The new president’s gentler approach to foreign relations is challenging the authority and message of the heads of anti-US regimes who frame America as an enemy to their populations.

Take a look at how some stated enemies are rebuffing the new administration’s overtures, and vote at the end for which foe poses the most formidable challenge for Obama.

OK. Or you can vote here on which one he will try hardest to suck up to. Anyway, as you flip through the slideshow and accompanying captions, you’ll see that all you need is love. I suppose another way of looking at it is, while Obama is a really nice guy, you don’t have to worry, because the bad guys are so bad they aren’t even trying to sucker him. Something like that.

1. The mad mullahs

2. “El Diablo”

3. Krazy Kim

4. Why Do They Hate Us?

5. Fidel’s Kid Brother

6. Bush Lied, People Died

(The Globe didn’t include those last two, but there was a lot that wasn’t included in that breezy foreign policy primer, which is apparently a fun way to engage readers interactively in a superfluous and meaningless way that also makes them feel good. Could work!)

I would have voted, but there was no entry for Obama.

Straight from the Onion. My God. Bryan Bender is a colossal idiot, and so is whoever wrote the headline above. I would, however, love to see that article run on page one above the fold in every paper in America. Let America see just how silly and unserious people like this are.

My favorite part of the article was this:

Several specialists said they worry the feeling of vulnerability could force some anti-American leaders to act out. Iran recently launched its first satellite - exhibiting the same capabilities to launch a missile thousands of miles - while North Korea is reportedly threatening to conduct a long-range missile test of its own and possibly a second underground nuclear explosion.

“I think they are going to be starved for attention,” said Thomas Barnett, a former instructor at the Naval War College and author of the new book “Great Powers: America and the World After Bush.”

Dr. Spock meets foreign affairs. Unbelievable. As satire directed towards the Amad’s of the world, it would be funny. It’s meant to be taken seriously, though, and that’s just sad.

Well, I see the Obama Administration is busily engaged in producing new “root causes”. Interesting.
