Chimp Shots
Comparing the president of the United States to a chimp would be pretty bad, especially a dead one. It could have pretty vile racial overtones, though in fairness, presidential chimp comparisons seem to have transcended race. Where was the deep sense of shock the last time someone compared the president of the United States to a chimp? A little ironic this comes so close on the heels of the outrage over the Obama/Hitler comparisons.
Maybe, as Moderate Voice charitably suggests, a political cartoon about putting down a bloated, overweight chimp gone wild is just a cartoon about a bloated, overweight wild thing that ought to be put out of our misery. As I recall, it was the bloated, overweight, out-of-control ape called Congress and not Obama that wrote that bill. Anyone object to the idea of Congress as a rampaging pongid that needs to be shot?
Moderate Voice, by the way, thinks comparing presidents to chimps is OK if the presidents are white, which sounds a little pre-post-racial.
Boston Globe’s “Political Intelligence” (no jokes please) actually notes that Congress wrote the bill, but still seems to prefers to think of the chimp as Obama. Sorry, my bow-tied bumkissing simian pals: The offending cartoon’s line about needing someone else to write the next bill makes it clear enough even to spot from Morrissey Boulevard. Now, if the cartoonist had them saying now they’d need someone else to sign it, or someone else to stay as far away from the sausage-making as possible, in front of adoring crowds elsewhere, then Obama’s your run-amuck chimp.
Left Field promises a quick course in racist iconography, but fails as usual to know it is talking about. Here’s a quick lesson in politics. Congress is not Barack Obama. Separate matter, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are both bloated, overweight rampaging white chimps. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. As noted above, the left clearly moved the chimp thing out of the racial arena and into the mainstream of political mockery.
Malkin with some actual discussion of actual racial iconography issues in the post-racial era.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

Jules,
Keep going further back. There were all those Reagan/Bonzo jokes and allusions. There were also constant referrals from the press to Lincoln as “that great ape”.
Funny how sensitive to slights the left has suddenly become. Yawn….
If the children wish to be treated as adults, they ought to learn to behave like them. At least publicly.

I’d say the entire lot of Congrestitutes remind me of the apes from 2001: A Space Odyssey, but since I’m not from congress, I’ll not saying anything.
