The Unforgiving Minute
The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier’s Education by Craig Mullaney, West Point grad, Rhodes scholar, Afghan war vet. Weekend read recommendation reviewed by Dilegge at Small Wars Journal, with a shout-out from Petraeus and links to other reviews. Title riffs off Kipling:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty Seconds’ worth of distance, run,
Yours is the Earth and everything in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!
SWJ is also plugging The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa: With E. D. Swinton’s “The Defence of Duffer’s Drift”, a fictional counterinsurgency lessons learned by Capt. Michael Burgoyne and Capt. Albert J. Mackwardt, with a foreward by John Nagl. Excerpted here.

Jules,
I read “The defense of Duffer’s Drift” decades ago. We used it in teaching small unit tactics and thinking problems through. Its an EXCELLENT book and ought to be on anyone’s shelf who serves in the military, and those who aspire to lead men.
