Misery Index

BusinessWeek rates the unhappiest cities in America, tops the list with Portland, Oregon, due to No. 1 in use of anti-depressants, No. 4 status in divorce, and 222 cloudy days a year. I dunno. Sounds to me like they’re happy pill-poppers who ditched the ball and chain. Not my lifestyle, but who’s to judge?

I’d have to put BW’s No. 9 Las Vegas at the top of the list, with its No. 1 in suicide ranking. That pretty much trumps everything else as an indicator of unhappiness  … in addition to a lot of casinos and cheap glitz which, dunno about you, I find depressing. But as Surber notes, if it’s a list, it must be true. BW’s story about recession-fueled suicide/misery here. What’s bumming me out that BW forces its readers to click through 20-odd pages to see its depressing list, which is dominated by the Midwest, rust-belt in particular. If you want to pull the Bandaid off quick, just go to the Surber link.
