Slumdog
Turns out “Slumdog Millionaire” is the middle-aged suburban date night hit of the season. Theater packed. They liked it, applauded, which I never really get when no one who had anything to do with the flick is within earshot. Great flick, great device to tell the kid’s story, great Indian misery/magnificence depictions, nothing in there that isn’t true … including the great closing Bollywood dance scene. Because India is, among other things, like a living, breathing Bollywood dance scene. For the uninitiated, a great introduction to India comfortably removed from actual heat, wafts, throngs, beggars. Re India, triumph and tragedy, here’s my pre-viewing Slumdog Millionaire Nation take.

Any Indian movie that doesn’t involve guys pretending to be paralyzed, crippled, lame, blind, or diseased in order to get close to a girl is welcome. Also, bad guys who aren’t complete idiots.

Fatty Bolger is an informed critic. Technically, SDM isn’t exactly an Indian movie, though. Big question: who gets the cultural shift out of this. Hollywood goes Bollywood, or Bollywood goes Hollywood?
