The Britney Presidency

Or is it the Regis and Barry H. presidency? I think the Boston Herald’s Lauren Beckham Falcone may be on to something. As usual. Cruel highlights follow. No, not Lauren’s …

… her column’s:

Sure, we like our presidents to be accessible, but as Britney Spears taught us all, sometimes too much limelight can sour a career.

First there was the Jay Leno visit, all fine and lovely until that unfortunate Special Olympics remark, undercutting the historic appearance with a lesson in insensitivity.

It wasn’t Joaquin Phoenix on “Letterman,” but still.

Maybe, but in presidential terms, it wasn’t far off.

Next stop? Prime-time Sunday night on CBS, where our leader tapped his boorish side again, yukking it up on “60 Minutes” with a few laughs at the financial crisis, prompting Steve Kroft to ask, “Are you punch-drunk?”

And to round out the media tour, President Obama will address the nation Tuesday night, pre-empting, of all things, “American Idol.”

The clicking sound you hear is a million tweens texting “IMPCH!!”

… it all feels more “Regis and Kelly” than fireside chat. Winks, yes. Gravitas, not so much.

… like a starlet walking the red carpet for the first time, Obama is tripping up.

That’s because a president doesn’t belong there.

Yeah. Sort of like Britney shouldn’t be running the economy or the war. Even though it seems like it most days.

    But Jules,

If Britney or Jay-Z or Kid Rock were running the show, we’d have a valid excuse for all the vapidware policies and comments. In short, it’s what we’d expect from a clueless Hollyweird type.

President? Not so much. Somebody needs to remind him that HE IS IN CHARGE.

It’s a sad state of affairs when Inspector Clouseau seems more in tune with reality than the POTUS.

Obama needs the adoration of the crowd. As a presidential campaigner he got that, but as president, it was never likely to continue. That seems to be what he can’t accept.
