In The Time Of Liking Us Better

Obama faces resistance on multiple fronts as he heads to the G20 Tuesday, has given up on others. They don’t like his economic plans, he isn’t even going to try to get them to help in Afghanistan, no big expectations on Iran, Russia and China prodding for signs of weakness, etc. NYT explains it’s not that the world doesn’t love Obama:

The challenges stem in part from lingering unhappiness around the world at the way the Bush administration used American power. But they have been made more intense by the sense in many capitals that the United States is no longer in any position to dictate to other nations what types of economic policies to pursue — or to impose its will more generally as it intensifies the war in Afghanistan and extracts itself from Iraq.

It’s inherited.

“The rest of the world is yearning for him,” said Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard economist. “On the one hand, they’ll all be criticizing him, and criticizing the American model. But they all want to hear that he does have a miracle to deliver.”

Sure, whatever. I’m just expecting more gaffes to shovel. Meanwhile, looks like the Euros will be driving this bus. Times of London: Merkel snubs Brown, Obama on global New Deal.

Yeah, well: world, welcome to America.

    You mean . . . you mean . . . that almost 63 million Americans . . . were wrong?

There is to be no miracle?

If the rest of the world is yearning for him, they can have him.

Did you read where the “lightworker” is taking along a supporting staff of almost 500 for his trip to Europe?

500? What, is that so there are sufficient underlings to line his path and throw scented rose petals before him so his feet do not touch the despoiling earth? Or is that the number of attendants her Royal Majesty Michelle requires so that her children won’t suffer?

The nation is suffering under his idiocracy and he keeps telling us how we’ll all need to tighten out belts, yet it seems he’s been able to get a rather larger belt to accommodate his expanding federal waistline.

What a bunch of incompetent buffoons. If you wrote all this out as a screen play, nobody would buy it because it’s all so damned far-fetched. Yet here we all are, livin’ the dream, eh?

I’d buy more bourbon, but I need the money for food for my kid.

I haven’t even gotten my unicorn yet, and these idiots want miracles?

I’m going to have to agree with NYT here–no matter what he says or does, he’s going to be heavily criticized by the international community. Still, he does have many global fans and hopefully that will help him at least in getting an audience and commanding respect. Personally, I prefer his/Brown’s goals for the globe’s economic turmoils far better than those proposed by France’s Prime Minister, Sarkozy or the lack of concern from Canada/Germany. But it is true, there will be protectionist dangers all around as each country tries to take care of its own. I watched an interesting video on all of this at newsy.com today. It’s a good summary and gives a few different perspectives on the recent G20 meeting in London:
