Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Euro love wins Yank approval, as a new poll gives Obama 66 percent overall approval rating on the heels for his mega-junket. CBS:
As President Obama concludes his well-publicized trip to Europe, Americans are more positive about the respect accorded to a U.S. president than they have been in years, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.
67 percent liked the respect an American president got from world leaders. Apparently 67 percent of Americans didn’t make it past the part in the reporting about the thunderous applause from Euros when Obama helpfully did their America-bashing for them, to the part where Euros, unhelpfully, said no, non, nein to his requests.
“Well-publicized” is a pretty good term for it. Coverage tended to focus on the cute bits. I’m guessing about 97 percent of Americans missed the bit about him bowing and scraping, due to a regrettable dearth of reportage. OK, maybe 99 percent. And you couldn’t blame anyone for thinking he thought up that “not at war with Islam” thing himself.
Uh oh. Don’t let 67 percent of Americans see this. Vid via Gateway: Obama jumps at gunshot.
It was fun, a little like Miley Cyrus does Europe, a headspinning montage of Obama in front of famous old stuff like the Queen, though Miley wouldn’t have missed the obligatory hamming it up with the guards at Buckingham Palace scene. But he’s coming home now. Back to the workaday bumbling, irksome checkbook balancing chores and those darned credit card bills. Theoretically those numbers start tanking again soon.
Moderate Voice is excited by the new poll, apparently doesn’t get it represents Obama gone.
Newsbusters notes that post-Bush, more than half of Americans still feel we’re headed in the wrong direction. And that NBC thinks going to Turkey was “shrewd.” I dunno. Seemed kind of gutless. A lot of Muslims aren’t big fans of Turkey, thanks to its ties with Israel and its secularism. A lot of Turks are wishy-washy about that, too, to judge by Islamist leanings in recent years. If Obama really wants to make friends and influence Muslims, he probably wants to go to Gaza and exclaim, “Ich bin ein Palestinian!”

I’ve been wishing we could change the locks while he’s out of the country. The stock market likes it when he’s gone, but as the day approaches when he returns, the market tanking again.
He looks a bit jumpy in Turkey - this won’t show up on Jay Leno:

[...] media for its intense, unfair scrutiny of the President’s overseas trip (particularly, their widespread airing both of Obama’s criticisms of his own country and his deferential bow before Saudi royalty) [...]

November, 2010. I just keep telling myself, hang on until November, 2010. And after that, November, 2012. Provided we haven’t been nuked by NoKos or Iranians by then.
