Another Test

UPDATE: Boston Herald, Massachusetts Maritime Academy-trained officers, crew reportedly safe, retook ship after long battle with pirates. Updated to reflect captain still held, interview with the wife. More on the officers here.

More via Herald, Pirates nabbed the captain, have him in a boat. Crew in control of the ship, negotiating for the captain, awaiting arrival of warships.

Somali pirates capture an American-flagged Maersk ship, with 20 American crewmen. via Yahoo. Awaiting response. Given the prevalence of al-Qaeda affiliates in the neighborhood, this kind of high-value nab raises additional concerns beyond the usual ransom game. Tigerhawk wonders why it hasn’t happened before. I don’t know. Maybe not so many American-flagged ships out there. Tigerhawk also calls on Obama to get Jeffersonian. That would be helpful. Obama prefers to think of himself as Lincoln but, striving for Carterdom, is lucky if he looks like Clinton on a good day.

    Obama is thanking his lucky stars this morning. Another crisis has arisen that will take people’s minds off His European tour.

    It will be interesting to see how Team Obama spins this. Obama cannot appease these pirates. He will actually have to take action. We’ll see how he handles it.

    I assume the US ships have orders to arrest the ship’s crew for violating the civil rights of the pirates, and for taking defensive actions instead of meekly capitulating.

    The US ships no doubt also have orders to seize the ship and its contents, plus any cash the crew might have.
