Don’t Let The Door Hit Your Arlen Specter …
On the way out. Facing the specter of losing, Arlen switches sides. Statement here. News here. Malkin, to whom the same phrase above occured, with some background. Outside The Beltway: poor timing on the door/ass hittage avoidance. Gateway, with a simple “goodbye” adds this odd remark from RNC chair Steele:
“Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not. Let’s be honest-Senator Specter didn’t leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record. Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don’t do it first.”
I don’t get it. Beating him would be good. The Dems beating him would be better. A cad who leaves claiming principles in a matter of naked political interest, that’s not something to be happy about? Hot Air notes that Obama is “thrilled.” He’s welcome to him. Will no doubt enjoy the filibuster-proofness, also known as “enough rope.”

You are, of course, presuming Arlen Specter has any honor or morals in the first place. Specter knew he was going to get trashed in the Republican Primary and wants to keep HIS seat (note, every Senator presumes the seat they occupy does not belong to the State, but rather themselves).
Andrew Wilkow asked a very good question: what did the Democrat Party offer Specter, Snow and Collins?

If he were an honorable man (OK, I know he isn’t, but humor me here, please), he would resign and ask for a special election to be held for the remainder of his term. He would also contribute the contents of his campaign fund to the Senate Republicans.

I think the reason we are hearing vocal disappointment from Collins, Snowe and Graham is that Specter beat them to the punch. He is going to get all of the good stuff from the Dems for giving the Dems 60 votes. Now, Collins, Snowe and Graham can’t get as much for a move to their natural home. They will also no longer be so crucial on very important votes. Instead, blue dog Dems will be the key.

I think Brian has some good points. In any case, Spector’s move is good for the voters. It removes any lingering doubt about his political philosophy, and puts a spotlight on his self-interested vote-whoring. I wish more of our so-called politicians would come so clean.
