Bill Kristol with the good news re Specter’s switch: No O excuses.
With the likely seating of Al Franken from Minnesota, Democrats will have 60 seats in the Senate, giving Obama unambiguous governing majorities in both bodies. He’ll be responsible for everything. GOP obstructionism will go away as an issue, and Democratic defections will become the constant worry and story line.
It’s a Pyrrhic kind of victory, a tactical advantage in the wake of defeat, that relies on the opponent’s missteps. Goes nowhere without some party rebuilding and the emergence of candidates on the GOP side, though.
Limbaugh to Specter, via CNN: “Take McCain and his daughter with you.” I dunno. If you can’t have free thought, freedom of action and a range of views, then you don’t have much. They can have Olympia Snowe, though.
Steele strikes a different note. CNN again: Specter “flipped the bird.”
OK, enough on that guy. No, hang on, one more. Glenn Thrush at Politico:
Back in ‘01, when Vermont Republican Jim Jeffords went independent so he could caucus with the Democrats, a senator took to the floor to suggest the Senate alter its rules to preclude midterm switchers from causing a changeover in control of the chamber.
His name? Guess.
Specter: “How should these issues be handled by the Senate for the future? I intend to propose a rule change which would preclude a future recurrence of a Senator’s change in parties, in midsession, organizing with the opposition, to cause the upheaval which is now resulting.”
Sound like he’ll do well with the party of thought control and nanny-statism.

If there’s any justice, he’ll be the first Senator to contract Swine Flu, followed by Snowe & Collins. Then they will lose their reelection bids.
Just sayin’

This fool saw that he was going to get voted out of his job, and switched sides to keep that from happening. They don’t even bother to hide their cynical vote-whoring anymore.
