Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter
This post actually has nothing to do with Marie Osmond or her lesbian daughter. This is actually part of a serious blogological experiment proposed by my colleague, the Other McCain, to see measure our ability to influence the algorithm on one small part of the Googlesphere.
If you don’t know what a Google bomb is, it’s when you link a certain phrase to a certain URL. For example, I could take the phrase “hot Canadian chick” and link it to Kathy Shaidle’s Five Feet of Fury home page. If a phrase is sufficiently unusual (e.g., “sexy hung Speedo”) and if enough people do the same link on the same phrase, then it will skew the Google algorithm* so that the URL you’re linking becomes the top result in that category.
I kicked ass on traffic this week because I was smart enough to get the phrase “Carrie Prejean nude” before anybody even imagined such pictures existed. At any rate, since it’s Thursday and that particular Gold Rush appears to be receding, let’s have some fun.
Everybody link Jules as “Marie Osmond’s lesbian daughter.” Make it a legit blog post, share your deeply felt convictions, whatever, just make sure that the phrase “Marie Osmond’s lesbian daughter” is linked to Jules’s post. Also, feel free to criticize me for shamelessly exploiting this story — Jules, I think, was being politely critical — because shameless exploitation is something that only gay left-wing gossip bloggers are supposed to do.
In fairness, I doubt Marie Osmond’s lesbian daughter will have quite the cachet of “Carrie Prejean Nude.” Marie Osmond’s lesbian daughter’s going to have to work it a little harder if she wants any megatonnage in her Google bomb. But maybe that is what makes this a worthwhile experiment, as a sort of control on the “Carrie Prejean Nude” observations.
Let me add that it had never occured to me before tonight that I might want to be closely associated with the phrase “Marie Osmond’s lesbian daughter.” But there it is. If this is to be my small contribution to the blogological sciences, so be it.
Also, I wasn’t being even remotely critical of the Other McCain. If anything, I salute him for addressing the important issues of the day in intriguing ways that speak to all of us … especially those of us whose development was arrested around, say, 18 or so.
As of this posting, by the way, the Other McCain still owns the top slot for “Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter” on Google. I’m not even in the first five pages. I’m not posting to the Other McCain’s post about Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter to avoid skewing the experiment but if you’ll find it at the Google link above. But it accordance with standard Rule 2 protocols, here’s a general Other McCain link.
UPDATE: Eureka! The post that McCain had nominated for a “Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter” Googlebomb, which was actually titled “Smarter Than The View,” is still not on the front page of the search. But this post, “Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter,” has top slot as of 7:30, May 8. Fascinating. I can’t wait to tell my colleague, the Other McCain, about these astonishing results! Also, just noticed I’ve got lead “blogs about osmond” on the “Osmond” google search. So far it barely rates as a Google firecrackr, let along bomb, though. I need those Osmonds to do something scandalous. PO the left. Or just get naked.
By the way, point of personal pride, nearly two years later I own “Lazy Stupid or Willfully Ignorant.”
Welcome, incoming Googlistas. We can now officially consider this project a success. I have no idea who is channeling all of you into the “Marie Osmond’s Lesbian Daughter” search, but you’re welcome here. Come on in. If you found this experiment disappointing, you may prefer a (Hot) Reporter Investigated For Looting. Or the nakedly earnest earnest activism of PETA. Who doesn’t like bikini girls with machine guns?
