New Star Trek Not Progressive Enough

Important critique via Protein Wisdom. Apparently the much-awaited prequel involves an inordinate amount of unwarranted ass-kickage.

I admit, I was a fan of the original Trek series back in the 60s. But I was young and dumb, and didn’t really track on all the progressivism. It was just a hoot to watch an actual scifi show on TV (I was also heavily into the Golden Age of science fiction literature).

It was not so. In the original (1960s) Star Trek, liberals were typically portrayed as naive fools who would have caused the deaths of everyone if it weren’t for the crew of the Enterprise, a military vessel, coming to the rescue.

In one episode, a peace activist caused the Nazis to win WWII. The only solution was to let her be killed before she met FDR.

There was another episode in which primitive peoples were victims of a superpower war-by-proxy. The episode concluded with a justification of the Vietnam war!
