Briar Patch
Yglesias thinks the evil Cheneyite plan to humiliate Pelosi will fail, because insisting on a Truth Commission will result in a Truth Commission, and it’s only fair that people who have already admitted they ordered waterboarding to save Americans will look worse than the people who just went along with it and then denounced it and lied about it. This is the kind of thinking you get when you hire someone to do your political deep thinking who can’t remember the Reagan admin and was still in high school in the Clinton admin. And apparently doesn’t know his Uncle Remus. Happy 29th, Matty!
Greg Sargent, meanwhile, is excited to note that FOX, apparently in the news business, would reveal dark secrets about its dastardly Republican masters: They are enjoying watching Nancy swing in the wind. It takes the heat off their guys.
The CIA outpolls Pelosi, big. Rasmussen:
The CIA is viewed favorably by 63% and unfavorably by 24%. For Pelosi, the comparable numbers are 35% favorable and 55% unfavorable.
Allahpundit at HotAir: “Look at those last numbers and tell me Stephen Hayes isn’t right that Cheney, against all odds and despite his unpopularity, has won this debate.”
Wow, her numbers are even worse than the wretched, diminished Republican Party as it wanders in the wilderness. Gallup gives them 39 percent party identification to the Dems 53 percent. You’d think Nancy could scrape up a little better likeability, being on the popular team and all.
The good news for Pelosi is that by a margin of 2 percent, people think her story is plausible. 43 percent think the CIA may have misled her, and 41 percent don’t. Sargent finds the marginal plurality “interesting” and “at odds with the way the traditional news organizations have covered this dispute.” Really? Taylor Marsh takes a slightly more … conservative view. That hefty CIA favorable trumps 2 percent. FireDogLake looks askance at the notion that anyone would poll on Nancy and the CIA, when the past week clearly has been about evil Cheneyite torture. Hey “Assmussen,” howzabout a poll about whether Bush lied, huh?
… What the heck is a FireDogLake, anyway? Dunno, but the burny wetness would explain the irritability.
FOX, hurtfully, never mind what Nancy says she wasn’t told. How about what she did with what she was told? Nothing. For seven years.
Other things Nancy knew before everyone else did. She was about to get it from Panetta, with the White House’s blessing. Washington Examiner.
About Nancy and the White House, my lefty colleagues at the Boston Globe weigh in with some helpful perspective: “Like many similar Washington events, it is a power play masquerading as a scandal.” True. Sort of. Actually, it was a scandal that blew up under the scandalmongers, who suddenly found themselves grasping to hang onto power. In the depths of this dark Republican plot, the lefties seem to have forgotten whose idea it was to spend 2009 obsessing on the events of 2002 in the first place. Globie Canellos thinks the fact that Pelosi is a woman is her trump card with Obama. Sounds like an exercise in PC logic, but maybe the Globe knows its people. When I think about Obama, I think about buses, and people going under them.
Meanwhile, Boehner’s rubbing it in, via Malkin. O cruel cruelty, the Nutcracker PeloSuite. Related, not so different, Collins at Protein Wisdom with some other stories that could stand a little more light of day, and Hyscience with your 2102 Pelosi GTxi SS/RT sport edition.
OK, this looks like a good place to go out. Enough about Pelosi. Former Clinton special counsel Lanny Davis, in a Washington Times op-ed that doesn’t even mention the House Speaker: Throw Cheney into that briar patch already!

I think the evil Cheneyite plan to humiliate Pelosi has already succeeded. That said, she’ll probably stay Speaker of the House because Obama needs her to ride rough-shod over the rest of the Dems. Since she’s known to be vindictive, I look for her to try and get some payback for this embarrassment, and the more enemies she makes, the better our chances in 2010.
