Dome Capping

In the offing? Republican operative John Feehery at Politico handicaps the chances for a Democratic Congressional coup, comparing Pelosi’s woes against Republicans who lost their heads under the Dome, finds current conditions perfectly stormy.

While it is awfully early to be predicting that House Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.) will face a leadership challenge because of her handling of “torture-gate,” conditions are starting to gel for the good old-fashioned congressional coup.

Feehery hurtfully notes that Pelosi’s tenure, by several key Democratic measures, has been disastrous. We’re still in Iraq, and Pelosi’s own leadership team is plagued with the ethical problems she promised to end. While they might overlook that, the far left meanwhile is increasingly dissatisfied with both her and Obama on GWOT support past and present. Now, by looking bad, she’s making everyone look bad.

Steyn doesn’t think torture-gate is enough to bring Pelosi down. But with all of the above and the pork addiction in mind perhaps, Steyn looks forward to seeing Pelosi remain the face of the Dem Cong through November 2010.

Here’s a middle path. Have this torture thing drag out, even more torturously, for another year or so. A good way to do it might be some kind of bi-partisan Truth Commission, also known as “enough rope,” just like the lefties have been squawking for. (Complicating factor: Steyn cruelly notes that in the new Democratic orthodoxy, 2009 is increasingly not 2002, whether it was then or not … put another way, “what-did-I-know-and-when-did-I-know-that-I-knew-it.”) If for some reason they finally decide to back away from that third rail, then as Steyn suggests Pelosi can be relied on to come up with new debacles.
