Everyone Else Did

So I don’t have to. Weigh in on the Great Debate, that is. All I have to say is, when you’re president of the United States, and you and the House Speaker of your one-party government find yourselves in an extended debate with the internationally reviled ex-veep of a despised former administration, you’ve already lost. Never mind that you conceded defeat pretty much from the moment you took office, and you’re now just trying to make it look good with half-measures … not fair, I know, they’re really one-eighth, more like one-sixteenth measures … that don’t even fool your once-adoring lefty base.

There is one check on the lefty side of the ledger, though. The right needs an old guy with a bad ticker to do this?

OK, here’s everyone else:

Toby Harnden, UK Telegraph: The 10 Punches Dick Cheney Landed On Obama’s Jaw.

… the very fact that Obama chose to schedule his speech (Cheney’s was announced first) at exactly the same time as the former veep was a sign of some weakness.

A sign? I’d call it a glaring 10-story video billboard in Times Square. But he’s moving up in his choice of debate partners from the ill-advised Rush-Obama match. Which was an improvement on Joe the Plumber. Look for something approximating presidential behavior in, say, 2011 or so.

Krauthammer, Washington Post (lefties may know him as the “Cripplehawk“):

If hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue, then the flip-flops on previously denounced anti-terror measures are the homage that Barack Obama pays to George Bush. Within 125 days, Obama has adopted with only minor modifications huge swaths of the entire, allegedly lawless Bush program.

Allah at HotAir: “We must never compromise our most cherished values, unless its really important.”

Malkin: NYC jihadi bust initiated under Bush admin gets no love. Crickets on the 9/11 redux flyover, too. Hey, no fair, none of the stuff was real man-caused disasterism!

The Other McCain: Cheney Tortures Pelosi.

Maguire: “Obama’s “I’m tough on terror, too,’ speech … spoken like a law professor.”

Powerline liveblogged, produced some vid … and hurtfully noted the rhetorical absence of Lincoln and Roosevelt. Damn, those guys are busy.

OK, we’ll shift gears with Brooks at NYT, and a fascinating example of pretzel logic: The two- or three-year period that the left won’t shut up about were Cheney’s salad days he won’t let go of, and he loses to Obama who loses to Bush, because Bush’s CIA already cleaned all that up. But Obama is a winner because he adopted the Bush-Cheney program wholesale, all that electioneering notwithstanding. Oh yah, and why do they hate us? At least I think that’s what he’s trying to say.

Andrew Sullivan (just because it’s always fun):

A simple note having now read the former vice-president’s despicable and disgraceful speech. It confirms the very worst of him, and reveals just how callow, just how arrogant, and just how reckless and unrepentant this man is and has long been. There was not a whisper of regret or reflection; there was a series of lies and distortions, a reckless attack on a graceful successor, inheriting a world of intractable problems, and a reminder that while serious men and women will indeed move on, Cheney never will.

Well, no one can ever accuse Andrew Sullivan of not moving on. Lately, he’s been moving on from the Obamism, ever since Obama brought change! To Bushism!

McClatchy: Gotcha on Cheney! (Hey, over here, peanut dude. Can I get a bag of roasted MSM gotcha on how exactly Obama’s changed anything?)

NYT’s Peter Baker: “Obama faces pitfalls with ’surgical’ tack.” Yeah. Performing brain surgery on yourself is never a good idea. Helpful hints to Dr. Obama, as long as you’re going ahead with it: Everything in the mirror is backwards. Objects viewed in the rearview mirror are closer than they appear.

OK, palate cleanser. It’s Treacher with some Cheneyku!
